Delinquency Schools And The Social Bond written by Christine A. Eith and has been published by LFB Scholarly Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Education categories.

Annotation Eith analyzes the impact of individual and school level factors on the school bond as a protective factor against delinquency. She further assesses significant differences in school bonding between the genders and across race/ethnicity. Her results show that at the elementary school level, the school bond does not function as predicted by Hirschi (1969). However, at the secondary school levels the school bond begins to function as theorized. A student s strong bond to school at the secondary school levels serves a preventative function against delinquent behaviors, drug use, and delinquent peer associations; regardless of overall delinquency in the school environment.

Understanding delinquency and reasons why young adolescents disengage in education and later drop out of school has continually puzzled practitioners and theoreticians. While there have been works that have focused on delinquency and disengagement in education, the role that the family plays on reducing delinquency has generally remained unknown. Theoretical concepts that explain the propensities toward delinquent behavior and disengagement in education are discussed comprehensively in this unique book. The Panel on Juvenile Crime: Prevention, Treatment, and Control convened a workshop on October 2, 1998, to explore issues related to educational performance, school climate, school practices, learning, student motivation and commitment to school, and their relationship to delinquency. The workshop was designed to bring together researchers and practitioners with a broad range of perspectives on the relationship between such specific issues as school safety and academic achievement and the development of delinquent behavior. Education and Delinquency reviews recent research findings, identifies gaps in knowledge and promising areas of future research, and discusses the need for program evaluation and the integration of empirical research findings into program design.

Analyzing Delinquency among Kurdish Adolescents uses Hirschi’s social bonding theory to examine the mediating effect of social bonding on delinquent behavior among Kurdish teenagers, who were used as a case study to test the usefulness of this theory. In this study, participants were selected from one Gülen movement affiliated school and one public or non-Gülen affiliated school. This study sheds light on Turkish society’s chaotic conditions in southeastern Turkey, particularly with respect to Kurdish adolescents’ involvement in the Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK). There is a lack of research regarding how Kurdish adolescents are involved in delinquent behavior as portrayed in popular Turkish media. Social bonding theory, developed and mainly tested in American and western European contexts, needs additional exploration of its efficiency in a nonwestern, especially Islamic, society. Thus, this book helps to better understand the factors that influence crime and delinquency in developing, culturally diverse social structures. Scholars in sociology, psychology, and criminology, as well as in the fields of political science, Middle Eastern studies, and education, will greatly benefit from this study.

Schools And Delinquency written by Denise C. Gottfredson and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-11-20 with Education categories.

Schools and Delinquency, first published in 2001, provides a comprehensive review and critique of the current research about the causes of delinquency, substance use, drop-out, and truancy, and the role of the school in preventing these behavior patterns. Examining school-based prevention programs and practices for grades K-12, Denise Gottfredson identifies a broad array of effective strategies improving the school environment, as well as some that specifically target youths at risk of developing problem behaviors. She also explains why several popular school-based prevention strategies are ineffective and should be abandoned. Gottfredson analyzes, within the larger context of the community, the special challenges to effective prevention programming that arise in disorganized settings, identifying ways to overcome these obstacles and to make the most troubled schools safer and more productive environments.

The text cultivates an understanding of juvenile delinquency by examining and linking key criminological theories and research. Coverage includes: the historical origins and transformation of "juvenile delinquency" and juvenile justice; the nature of delinquency, addressing the extent of delinquent offenses, the social correlates of offending and victimization (age, gender, race and ethnicity, and social class), and the developmental patterns of offending; theoretical explanations of delinquency, with insights from biosocial criminology, routine activities, rational choice, social control, social learning, social structure, labeling, and critical criminologies; evidence-based practice in delinquency prevention and contemporary juvenile justice. Social Control And Self Control Theories Of Crime And Deviance written by L.Edward Wells and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with History categories.

Control theories have dominated criminological theory and research since the 1969 publication of Hirschi's seminal work on the social bond. Social control and self-control theorists are unique in suggesting that patterns in criminal behaviors are better explained by variations in social constraints rather than by individual motivational impulses, thus indicating that their main concerns are the explication and clarification of the techniques, processes, and institutions of informal social control. The four major sections of this volume focus on: the similarities and differences among the major contributors to the early developmental stage of social control theory; the central importance of parents, peers, and schools in the creation of informal control mechanisms and their link to crime and delinquency; the theoretical underpinnings of self-control theory, including empirical tests and criticisms; and theoretical integrations of social control and self-control theories with various motivational theories of crime and delinquency.

Bost tests two structural models of violent delinquency among foster care youth derived from elements of HirschiOCOs (1969) Social Bond Theory. His seeks to determine whether adverse care experiences predict violent delinquency directly and, in tandem, indirectly through poor social bonds encompassing poor parent/caregiver attachments, poor school commitment, and involvement in prosocial activities. BostOCOs results indicate social bond variables fully mediate the care experience/violent delinquency link. However, the majority of the mediator effect was attributed to poor school commitment. Attachment to birth parents and grandparents had no effect on the model, while attachment to foster parents proved relevant. Moreover, the model functioned more efficiently for males than females and differed across gender and race subgroups."
