Research shows that enriching learning experiences such as learning communities, service-learning, undergraduate research, internships, and senior culminating experiences – collectively known as High-Impact Practices (HIPs) – are positively associated with student engagement; deep, and integrated learning; and personal and educational gains for all students – particularly for historically underserved students, including first-generation students and racially minoritized populations. While HIPs’ potential benefits for student learning, retention, and graduation are recognized and are being increasingly integrated across higher education programs, much of that potential remains unrealized; and their implementation frequently uneven. Colleges are eager to use the HIP nomenclature for recruitment, promoting equity for traditionally underserved student populations, and preparing lifelong learners and successful professionals. However, HIPs defy easy categorization or standardized implementation. They rely on fidelity, quality, and consistency – being “done well” – to achieve their learning outcomes; and, above all, require attention to access and equity if they are to fulfill their promise of benefitting all student populations equally. The goal of Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices is to provide examples from around the country of the ways educators are advancing equity, promoting fidelity, achieving scale, and strengthening assessment of their own local high-impact practices. Its chapters bring together the best current scholarship, methodologies, and evidence-based practices within the HIPs field, illustrating new approaches to faculty professional development, culture and coalition building, research and assessment, and continuous improvement that help institutions understand and extend practices with a demonstrated high impact. For proponents and practitioners this book offers perspectives, data and critiques to interrogate and improve practice. For administrators it provides an understanding of what’s needed to deliver the necessary support.

This authored text critically examines the theory and practice of college internship programs grounded in equity, diversity, inclusion, and access (EDIA) to examine issues such as infrastructure, inclusion, and privilege through "provocative praxis," a form of provocative inquiry that drives the ethics of pedagogy to envision student success both equitably and sustainably. Chapters use real-life, scenario-based examples through a social-justice framework to engage readers and spark multi-directional discussion aimed at removing obstacles to equitable participation in internships for all students. Ultimately, this book offers a holistic understanding of internships that factors in the social, economic, and cultural challenges faced by college students today, and calls for wholescale reform to college campus internship programs.

Global learning at home and education abroad programming designed for first-year students is extremely important for promoting intercultural competency, language acquisition, and the ability to negotiate complex systems to achieve global solutions. Through highlights of the work of faculty and international educators who create global learning experiences for students beginning postsecondary studies, we can begin to challenge many long-held assumptions about first-year student programming in international education. By reviewing case studies of successful approaches to this programming and its assessment, Promoting Intercultural Agility and Leadership Development at Home and Abroad for First-Year Students is a practical guide for international educators, including faculty and global learning staff, aimed at promoting global learning experiences for first-year students on university campuses. This publication showcases innovative approaches to fostering cultural agility and provides a toolbox for building robust global learning experiences for students, both at home and abroad. Intercultural competency skills can be developed over time, which equip students with experiences that are beneficial for their roles in academics, student development, and future career preparation. With the help of the research within this book, educators can design global learning programs for first-year university students that both build upon the assets students bring from secondary studies and introduce new concepts to students as they transition to university coursework.

Higher education professionals engage peer leaders in a variety of settings, from academic advising to residence life and from orientation to the senior year experience. Although the structure and administration of peer leader programs varies depending on the unique needs and features of a particular college or university, there is a commonality across peer leaders and their experiences. In short, peer leadership has a triple-impact in that it benefits student recipients, the institution, and the peer leaders themselves. Toward Peer Leadership as a High Impact Practice: Insights from the U.S. Data in the 2023 International Survey of Peer Leaders contributes to the academic scholarship on peer leadership through the recent collection of over 1,500 student responses on their experiences as peer leaders. This report looks at peer leadership as a high-impact practice, examines the equity and access to participation in peer leadership, and explores key questions for practitioners looking to implement, refine, or assess their peer leadership programs, as well as for researchers with an interest in drawing findings of this survey for their work.
