The first published African American poet, Jupiter Hammon was born into slavery in 1711 on Long Island, New York. Over the years he became a well-respected preacher and clerk-bookkeeper, as his poems were circulated widely. His poetry is composed in hymn stanzas and is noted for its rhythmic and passionate expression. In later years, attending the 1786 inaugural meeting of the African Society in New York, he delivered ‘An Address to Negros in the State of New-York’ — his most influential work. Only in more recent times have critics started to recognise Hammon’s important contribution to the development of black American literature. He spent most of his life enslaved in a North Carolina plantation, until Union troops reached the state in 1865. His three volumes of poetry cover a wide range of subjects in a variety of styles. Exhibiting a keen ear for rhythm and rhyme, his verses reveal a thorough understanding of human nature, exploring themes of slavery, freedom, politics, faith and love, while celebrating the rural beauty of Chatham County. The favourite poet of Queen Victoria, Adelaide Anne Procter was also an important philanthropist and early feminist writer. Her literary career was launched by Charles Dickens in his periodicals, as she submitted verses tackling themes of religion, homelessness, poverty and fallen women, drawing widespread attention to the misery of the conditions under which the poor lived. Her promising literary career was tragically cut short at the age of 38 by her death to tuberculosis, partly fuelled by her extensive charity work. After Alfred, Lord Tennyson, she was deemed by many the most popular poet of her day. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting. The Elizabethan writer John Lyly is regarded as the first prose stylist to leave an enduring impression upon the English language. His prose romance concerning the misadventures of Euphues, regarded by some as the first novel of English literature, launched his literary career in 1580’s London. Lyly’s interest with the exact arrangement and selection of words, his frequent use of classical similes and his artificial, yet elegant prose established the ‘euphuism’ style. In his work as a playwright, he contributed significantly to the development of prose dialogue in English drama. His comedies mark an advance upon those of his predecessors, with tales drawn from classical mythology, complemented with witty dialogue and skillful plot development. This eBook presents Lyly’s complete works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts appearing in digital print for the first time, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material.
