This book highlights recent advances in the identification, prediction and exploitation of demand side (DS) flexibility and investigates new methods of predicting DS flexibility at various different power system (PS) levels. Renewable energy sources (RES) are characterized by volatile, partially unpredictable and mostly non-dispatchable generation. The main challenge in terms of integrating RES into power systems is their intermittency, which negatively affects the power balance. Addressing this challenge requires an increase in the available PS flexibility, which in turn requires accurate estimation of the available flexibility on the DS and aggregation solutions at the system level. This book discusses these issues and presents solutions for effectively tackling them.

This book focuses on market/regulatory issues concerning smart grid applications, business cases and use cases. It covers the most relevant aspects of the smart grid—design considerations, economics, legal aspects and system management—and includes exercises at the end of each chapter. Since renewable energy generation is weather-dependent, it is more volatile, which affects market prices and the need for flexibility options including demand side management. In order to balance supply and demand in a sustainable manner also with high shares of renewables, energy systems need to be enhanced by smart grid technologies. This co-evolutionary transformation of the energy system, economic, societal, political and regulatory domains is challenging and calls for an integrated and interdisciplinary approach. This book provides an essential basis to prepare lecturers and students for engaging in the new energy world.

Demand side flexibility is the ability of power consumers to reduce their demand in periods of peak load, possibly shifting demand to other periods. The organisation for the Nordic energy regulators, NordREG, has ordered this study to explore demand side flexibility in a Nordic perspective. The study contains a literature survey of demand side flexibility and assess the potential for, and benefit of demand side flexibility. Based on the survey, the report highlights implementation barriers and possible contributions from to reducing these barriers. Existing barriers are e.g lack of ICT, automation services, smart meters and real-time prices. The greatest potential for demand side flexibility in the Nordics is within residential space heating. The value of demand side flexibility is uncertain, but may be 1–2 billion SEK per year.

Smart Grids From A Global Perspective written by Anne Beaulieu and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents a cross-disciplinary approach to smart grids, offering an invaluable basis for understanding their complexity and potential, and for discussing their technical, legal, economic, societal, psychological and security aspects. Smart grids are a complex phenomenon involving new, active roles for consumers and prosumers, novel social, political and cultural practices, advanced ICT, new markets, security of supply issues, the informational turn in energy, valuation of assets and investments, technological innovation and (de)regulation. Furthermore, smart grids offer new interfaces, in turn creating hybrid fields: with the increasing use of electric vehicles and electric transportation, smart grids represent the crossroads of energy and mobility. While the aim is to achieve more sustainable production, transportation and use of energy, the importance of smart grids actually has less to do with electricity, heat or gas, and far more with transforming the infrastructure needed to deliver energy, as well as the roles of its owners, operators and users. The immediate goal is to contribute positively to a sustainable world society. The chapters are revised and expanded texts based upon lectures delivered at the Groningen Energy Summer School 2014. Questions for further discussion at the end of each chapter highlight the key themes that emerge. The book offers an indispensable resource for researchers, professionals and companies in the power supply industry, and for students seeking to broaden and deepen their understanding of smart grids.

The power system has often been cited as the greatest and most complex machine ever built, yet it is predominantly a mechanical system. Technologies and intelligent systems are now available that can significantly enhance the overall functionality of power distribution and make it ready to meet the needs of the 21st century. This book explains how sensors, communications technologies, computational ability, control, and feedback mechanisms can be effectively combined to create this new, continually adjusting "smart grid" system. It provides an understanding of both IntelliGridSM architecture and EnergyPortSM as well as how to integrate intelligent systems to achieve the goals of reliability, cost containment, energy efficiency in power production and delivery, and end-use energy efficiency.

Electric Transportation Systems In Smart Power Grids written by Hassan Haes Alhelou and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The leading countries around the globe, including Australia, have taken serious steps to decarbonize their energy and transportation sectors as part of their obligations for a suitable future with fewer emissions and a better environment. The decarbonization plans in different countries have resulted in changes such as increases in the penetration level of renewable energy sources and the introduction of electric vehicles as a target for future transportation systems. This is the point where mobility meets electricity and brings new challenges and opportunities, especially in the integration with modern power systems. The main impact would be on the demand-side and the distribution network. These impacts would be also reflected in the operation, control, security, and stability of transmission systems. This creates a new grid architecture characterized by a growing variability and uncertainties. Moreover, the growth in the share of renewable energy in the total energy market is one of the major causes of the increasing fluctuations in the balance between generation and consumption in the whole system. Therefore, the key challenge lies in developing new concepts to ensure the effective integration of distributed energy resources and electric transportation systems, including EVs, into existing and future market structures. Electric Transportation Systems in Smart Power Grids address how these issues—EVs, E-buses, and other smart appliances on the demand side—can be aggregated to form virtual power plants, which are considered an efficient solution to provide operational flexibility to the grid. The book also discusses how EV-based virtual power plants can also provide myriad services for distribution system operators, transmission system operators, and even local prosumers within the energy community. Features: Describes the services required to power systems from EVs and electric transportation sector Covers frequency control in modern power systems using aggregated EVs Discusses the integration and interaction between EVs and Smart grids Introduces electric vehicle aggregation methods for supporting power systems Highlights flexibility provided from electric transportation system to smart energy sector Discusses the high penetration level of renewable energy sources and EVs
