A obra propõe-se a desvelar os contornos desse movimento e a entender as consequências que são ou podem ser estendidas ao Direito, tentando compreender como este vem se organizando e quais reivindicações já estão ocorrendo no mundo jurídico. Parte de um ponto de vista da Teoria Crítica do Direito para pensar a sociedade de acordo com um comportamento crítico, que não leva em consideração apenas o ponto de vista do que está sendo reivindicado, mas também a sociedade como um emaranhado de reivindicações que, por vezes, andam lado a lado, mas em outras entram em conflito entre si. Partindo dessa ideia, a obra aborda os dois momentos fundamentais do movimento, a fundamentação ética-política e a postulação jurídica. O que a obra busca, além de compreender o direito animal, é intrigar o leitor e chamar a atenção para o fato de que a sociedade atual é extremamente complexa e, por isso, reivindicar em seu âmbito requer luta e, simultaneamente, exige o equilíbrio que o Direito pode proporcionar. Ao final, será possível entender a necessidade de refletir o direito animal, a partir da análise dos desenhos institucionais organizados pelo próprio movimento, e de se pensar em projetos de juridificação para cada grupo da sociedade, levando em conta a sua realidade e a relação com o Direito.
