This insider's account deals in detail with the political developments that led to the emergence of independent Bangladesh. The post-independence challenges described here are a valuable source of information on different aspects of state building. Kamal Hossain gives us a vivid eyewitnessaccount. His own involvement in different phases of the political struggle was intimate. It began from his personal association as legal defence for freedom of the media and victims of repression in the 1960s, in particular in the Agartala Conspiracy case. His later association with the AwamiLeague's team at Ayub's Round Table Conference and, still later, with Yahya Khan in 1971, provides valuable historical insights into the events leading to Bangladesh's war of independence. After independence, as Minister of Law, Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee (1972), and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and of Petroleum and Minerals (1973-1975), he focuses on the challenges of state building and political transformation. He offers thoughtful analyses of how acountry ravaged by war and deprived of resources managed to give itself a secular, democratic Constitution, won the respect of the world, gained membership of the United Nations and actively pursued peace and stability in the region. Bangladesh's pursuit of democracy was short lived as representative governance and secular, democratic politics were to be stifled by military rule. Bangladesh: Quest for Freedom and Justice as a political memoir offers critical insights into the processes of state formation in the initialyears.

Nestled along the Red Sea coast, Eritrea's history is one of resilience, resistance, and resilience once more. It is a story that threads through centuries of foreign dominion, from ancient empires to European colonialism. Yet, at the dawn of the 21st century, it was a different kind of domination that gripped Eritrea—a grip not forged by foreign powers but by internal forces.

"This book -- one in the four-volume set, Global Governance and the Quest for Justice -- focuses on themes of citizen organisation and empowerment set in the context of globalising legal processes. Chapter One sets the scene. Chapters Two, Three and Four focus on various challenges that globalisation poses for private law. How does substantive contract and tort doctrine that has been developed (mainly) for use within national legal systems adapt to more globalised dealings and wrongdoings? Should the source of regulation be private international law, harmonised national law, international accords (or some combination)? Chapters Five, Six and Seven focus on issues relating to access to justice (as a mode of empowerment) and its impact on the functioning of civil society. These chapters highlight a variety of procedural, professional and institutional challenges for access to justice in a globalised world. Chapter Eight considers how we are to reconcile the competing visions of the basis on which essential services are to be provided. In a global marketplace, is there any room for local values or for values other than those of free-market thinking? Finally, Chapter Nine focuses on the question of democracy in a globalised world. If civil society is to retain its political vitality, how are citizens to remain engaged and enfranchised as a new global politico-legal order takes shape?"--Bloomsbury Publishing.

There is an emerging consensus that what is projected as democratic governance and justice in Africa requires a re-calibration, in particular, in relation to the constitutive demos, human rights, the realisation of commitments at various governance levels and the convergence between these ideations. The post-colonial narrative on democracy has unveiled some crevices in rule of law, political equality, political participation, political culture and freedom of the press. Aside from the fact that these notions are threatened by some existing institutional structures, these notions are increasingly being negotiated across political spaces. Evident in the prevalent narrative is an imperative for Africa to assert its place on the global scene of democratic governance and justice. However, if this will be accomplished, it is important to understand some of the issues that need to be worked through in this transition.
