The Panic of 1893 and the depression it triggered mark one of the decisive crises in American history. Devastating broad sections of the country like a tidal wave, the depression forced the nation to change its way of life and altered the pattern and pace of national development ever after. The depression served as the setting for the transformation from an agricultural to an industrial society, exposed grave economic and social problems, sharply tested the country's resourcefulness, reshaped popular thought, and changed the direction of foreign policy. It was a crucible in which the elements of the modern United States were clarified and refined. Yet no study to date has examined the depression in its entirety. This is the first book to treat these disparate matters in detail, and to trace and interpret the business contraction of the 1890s in the context of national economic, political, and social development. Steeples and Whitten first explain the origins of the depression, measure its course, and interpret the business recovery, giving full coverage to structural changes in the economy; namely, the growing importance of manufacturing, emergence of new industries, consolidation of business, and increasing importance of finance capitalism. The remainder of the book examines the depression's impact on society—discussing, for example, unemployment, birth rate, health, and education—and on American culture, politics and international relations. Placing the business collapse at the center of the scene, the book shows how the depression was a catalyst for ushering in a more modern America.

Thailand Unhinged: The Death of Thai-Style Democracy delivers an excoriating critique of Thai politics and society over the tumultuous years that followed the ouster of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thailand's ongoing political crisis is explained through the prism of the country's painful post-absolutist history - a history marred by the systematic sabotage of any meaningful democratic development, the routine hijacking of democratic institutions, and the continued suffocation of the Thai people's democratic aspirations orchestrated by an unelected ruling class in an increasingly desperate attempt to hold on to its power. This new edition, uncensored, expanded, and revised, argues that the tragic events of 2010 mark the end of "Thai-Style Democracy" - a five-decades-old system of government that, notwithstanding the appropriation of some of the trappings of democracy, has largely preserved the right of "good" men of high birth, status, and wealth to run the country. The essays are written in a pointed, combative style, making Thailand Unhinged a highly unconventional mix of academic scholarship, literary journalism, and radical pamphleteering. IN PRAISE OF THE FIRST EDITION Written by an extremely talented Harvard PhD journalist/professor, this well-crafted collection of essays illuminate s] magnificently the tragedy of Thailand today. Trenchant and continually blistering. -Tom Plate, author of the bestselling Conversations with Lee Kuan Yew FEDERICO FERRARA (PhD, Harvard University) works as Assistant Professor at the City University of Hong Kong, Department of Asian and International Studies.

The way we glow when having a great conversation, building off each other’s ideas, finding solutions we can all be satisfied with. The way we spark together when marching and chanting in protest. This is living democracy. Yes, the world looks bleak. Across our society there’s a mounting sense of desperation in the face of the climate crisis, gaping economic inequality and racial injustice, increasing threat of war, and a post-truth politics divorced from reality. Extinction is in the air. But what if the solutions to our ecological, social and political crises could all be found in the same approach? What if it was possible for us to not just survive, but thrive? In Living Democracy, Greens activist Tim Hollo offers bold ideas and a positive vision. It’s the end of the world as we know it, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. In fact, around the globe, people and communities are beginning an exciting new journey. This book will inspire you, inform you, and get you fired up to co-create our common future. A living democracy. 'Everyone who reads this book is generously invited to get involved in the project of our times.' – David Ritter 'A brilliant conversation and action kick-starter from a man who walks the talk.'– Christine Milne 'It’s pretty clear that the world we’ve known isn't working very well anymore; we need to reinvent it, and this book brims with good ideas about what that means!' – Bill McKibben 'A great vision for a bloodless coup of mutual aid and rule-governed anarchy.' – Tyson Yunkaporta 'A manual for making a new and better world that shows us, with lucidity, courage and compassion, that the tools for building that world are already in our hands.' – James Bradley 'I have been waiting for this book, and now that Tim Hollo has written it, I’ll be putting it in the hands of pretty much everyone I know.' – Danielle Celermajer 'Timely, vivid and urgent, this is a book that meets the challenges of our age head-on.' – Scott Ludlam 'A brilliant treatise for our future and based on a deep understanding of First Nations knowledge – Tim Hollo has given us so much with this beautifully written work.' – Tjanara Goreng Goreng

The Servile Mind written by Kenneth Minogue and has been published by Encounter Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-20 with Political Science categories.

One of the grim comedies of the twentieth century was that miserable victims of communist regimes would climb walls, swim rivers, dodge bullets, and find other desperate ways to achieve liberty in the West at the same time that progressive intellectuals would sentimentally proclaim that these very regimes were the wave of the future. A similar tragicomedy is playing out in our century: as the victims of despotism and backwardness from Third World nations pour into Western states, academics and intellectuals present Western life as a nightmare of inequality and oppression. In The Servile Mind: How Democracy Erodes the Moral Life, Kenneth Minogue explores the intelligentsia’s love affair with social perfection and reveals how that idealistic dream is destroying exactly what has made the inventive Western world irresistible to the peoples of foreign lands. The Servile Mind looks at how Western morality has evolved into mere “politico-moral” posturing about admired ethical causes—from solving world poverty and creating peace to curing climate change. Today, merely making the correct noises and parading one’s essential decency by having the correct opinions has become a substitute for individual moral responsibility. Instead, Minogue argues, we ask that our governments carry the burden of solving our social—and especially moral—problems for us. The irony is that the more we allow the state to determine our moral order, the more we need to be told how to behave and what to think. Such is the servile mind.

The Chronic Crisis Of American Democracy written by Benjamin Studebaker and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-17 with Political Science categories.

This book argues that American democracy is in crisis. The economic system is slowly subjecting Americans of nearly all income levels and backgrounds to enormous amounts of stress. The United States lacks the state capacity required to alleviate this stress, and politicians increasingly find that if they promise to solve economic problems, they are likely to disappoint voters. Instead, they encourage voters to blame each other. The crisis cannot be solved, the economy cannot be set right, and democracy cannot be saved. But American democracy cannot be killed, either. Americans can’t imagine any compelling alternative political systems. And so, American democracy continues on, in a deeply unsatisfying way. Americans invent ever-more elaborate coping mechanisms in a desperate bid to go on. But it becomes increasingly clear that the way is shut. The American political system was made by those who are dead, and the dead keep it.

AMERICAN APOCALYPSE is a reflective commentary on the fifty-year Republican Assault on America from the 1971 Powell Republican political “dark money” offensive to save “Capitalism from Democracy” to the 2021 Republican violent Capitol Insurrection of January 6, 2021, to overturn the United States Constitution and the electoral will of the people. Yesterday’s America of prosperity for the many is today an America of prosperity for the few.” This will be America’s forever world of tomorrow should “We the People” allow a Republican “voter suppression” seizure of power succeed in 2022. The time is now “we” UNITE as a People of Liberty for an America of secure living-wage jobs, and an America of affordable healthcare, drug prices, and standard of living. The moment is here to END the Inequality, Corruption, and Violence that holds America hostage to the Republican legislative “trickle-down” tyranny of capital supremacy. The hour has come to DECLARE we are a patriotic people crying out for Equality, Truth, and Justice. Together in 2022 we must RESTORE Democracy to a “Land of the Free” longing for a “fair share” in an America of “Liberty and Justice for All.”
