Historians have frequently portrayed Italian anarchism as a marginal social movement that was doomed to succumb to its own ideological contradictions once Italian society modernized. Challenging such conventional interpretations, Nunzio Pernicone provides a sympathetic but critical treatment of Italian anarchism that traces the movement's rise, transformation, and decline from 1864 to 1892. Based on original archival research, his book depicts the anarchists as unique and fascinating revolutionaries who were an important component of the Italian socialist left throughout the nineteenth century and beyond. Anarchism in Italy arose under the influence of the Russian revolutionary Bakunin, triumphed over Marxism as the dominant form of early Italian socialism, and supplanted Mazzinianism as Italy's revolutionary vanguard. After forming a national federation of the Anti-Authoritarian International in 1872, the Italian anarchists attempted several insurrections, but their organization was suppressed. By the 1880s the movement had become atomized, ideologically extreme, and increasingly isolated from the masses. Its foremost leader, Errico Malatesta, attempted repeatedly to revitalize the anarchists as a revolutionary force, but internal dissension and government repression stifled every resurgence and plunged the movement into decline. Even after their exclusion from the Italian Socialist Party in 1892, the anarchists remained an intermittently active and influential element on the Italian socialist left. As such, they continued to be feared and persecuted by every Italian government. Originally published in 1993. Il libro raccoglie quattro studi su opere considerate generalmente “minori” della letteratura italiana dell’Ottocento (a eccezione delle Avventure di Pinocchio, recentemente “canonizzato” anche all’interno dei programmi dei concorsi per l’insegnamento di Lettere). Il filo conduttore è l’analisi del rapporto individuo-potere attraverso una lettura ravvicinata di alcuni testi che si possono considerare esemplari a proposito di tre fasi ben precise della storia italiana e della storia letteraria dell’Ottocento: i primi moti risorgimentali (Il manoscritto di un prigioniero di Carlo Bini); la costruzione dell’Italia postunitaria (Le avventure di Pinocchio di Collodi, Cuore e altri testi deamicisiani); la “questione sociale” di fine-secolo, legata agli effetti della politica crispina e ai movimenti di stampo socialista, anarchico e femminista (La folla di Paolo Valera, Gli Ammonitori di Giovanni Cena). Dal punto di vista metodologico si è cercato di analizzare i testi in una chiave il più possibile aperta e interdisciplinare ma con una certa predilezione per la lezione ermeneutica di Michel Foucault.

Questo libro parla di due vite parallele, quelle di Giovanni Pascoli e di Andrea Costa, due romagnoli che ebbero un ruolo importante nel passaggio fra Ottocento e Novecento. A Bologna in giovinezza Costa e Pascoli si conobbero, si frequentarono, furono amici all’università intorno a Carducci e compagni di imprese sovversive. Aderirono all’Internazionalismo, che raccoglieva in quegli anni giovani che avrebbero lasciato un segno. Seguì poi una lunga storia di lontananza e di silenzio, un trentennio di vuoto. Molte delle idee erano e rimasero comuni. Come Costa, Pascoli si professò socialista fino alla fine. E alla fine giunsero quasi contemporaneamente nel 1910 e nel 1912. Attraverso il recupero di fonti rare e di testi poco noti, il volume ricostruisce un periodo complesso e perlopiù inesplorato dalla critica e dalle storie letterarie, gettando una luce inedita non solo sulle vicende biografiche e storiche di Costa e Pascoli, ma anche sul significato dell’intera produzione pascoliana.
