Qual è lo stato di salute delle democrazie contemporanee? Gli autori di questo volume propongono una lettura della democrazia sotto un profilo sociologico. Questo è il primo testo pensato e immaginato per definire i contorni teorici e metodologici della “Sociologia di posizione”. Esso mira a ricostruire il contesto storico e critico in cui nascono le sociologie e, al contempo, a rilanciarlo per individuare i nessi con il tempo presente. Nella prima parte del volume si individuano alcune prospettive teoriche, che vanno dal recupero del materialismo storico e del pensiero di Marx agli studi sull’operaismo e il post-operaismo, dalla critica ai saperi-poteri di Foucault e Bourdieu alle teorie femministe e di genere, dalle epistemologie del Sud ai Critical Media Studies, dagli studi sulle ideologie vecchie e nuove ai processi di neoliberalizzazione nel loro impatto sulle società e sulle istituzioni, fino alle teorie relative al dopo-sviluppo. Nella seconda parte, invece, si individuano alcune prospettive metodologiche ed empiriche, che vanno dalla critica della costruzione sociale del dato alla conricerca, dall’analisi dei documenti all’etnografia, dall’uso delle fonti di archivio al metodo storico-comparato. Alla base di tutti i contributi risiede una concezione comune: la sociologia non può mai essere al servizio del potere; essa è una scienza che serve a spiegare i fenomeni sociali anche per posizionarsi rispetto a loro. Analizzare il presente, dunque, per definire i parametri critici delle alternative di società.
