Excerpt from Demosthenes IN the fifth century b.c., when Greece for the first time had to face a foreign foe, there were silent forces at work which needed only such a crisis to call them into active life. At the time of the Persian invasion, the sentiment of unity took Shape under Athenian leader ship, and overpowered the instincts of isolation. In the latter half of the fourth century B. C., when Greek freedom was again menaced, no such united front could be offered. The city life, on which Greek civilisation rested, had proved wanting in vital and expansive power, nor was its early promise of confederation ful filled. Excerpt from Demosthenes and the Last Days of Greek Freedom 383 322 It must be admitted that, time after time, the evidence which hascome down tousis not sufficient to give certainty to the conclusions based upon it. For the greater part of the period with which this book deals, a historian has to be content with Diodorus, who is notoriously untrustworthy in certain respects, particularly in chronology; with the meagre summary of Justin; with Plutarch, to whom the moral was perhaps as important as the truth of his story; and with the statements of orators about themselves and about one another. Excerpt from The Olynthiac, and Other Public Orations of Demosthenes: Translated, With Notes, &C MY principle aim in undertaking this work 18 to produce a readable version of Demosthenes, adhering to the original as closely as is consistent with the primary object. Brevity and Simplicity of style, together with the choice of apt and forcible Words, are the most essential elements of a good translation. It is sometimes asked, and there seem to be various opinions on the question, whether a translation should be literal? It depends, I say, upon the object which you pro pose to accomplish. If you are com posing a translation to he used in the Hamiltonian method of teaching, or as a mere help to the idle student against his day of examination, then you must be literal. And to perform such a task is not very difficult. But if you seek to accomplish a higher purpose, it 18 not to be done in this way: a work of another order becomes necessary. Excerpt from The Olynthiacs of Demosthenes: With Notes for Schools and Colleges F ranks, and Rehdantz particularly sensible and suggestive. When I have thought the renderings in any of these edi tions particularly just and happy, I have often quoted them and given credit accordingly; and I am indebted to them for suggestion and confirmation in other instances in which I can only make this general acknowledgment. In my own renderings I have tried to follow the rule which I inculcate in my classes of giving as close and exact a translation as can be given in good idiomatic English, aiming as far as possible to make Demosthenes speak an English as compact, clear, pointed, and energetic as his own Greek, and believ ing, as I do with all my heart, that there can be no better discipline for the faculties of reason and speech in the schools than that which may be acquired by a faithful rep resentation, a genuine reproduction, in our vernacular, if only that might be hoped for, of the Orations of Demosthenes. Excerpt from Demosthenes on the Crown: With English Notes About seven months after, when the apprehensions of the citizens had been removed in consequence of the moderation and clemency of Philip, Ctesiphon, a political admirer of Demosthenes, brought in a bill before the council of Five Hundred, proposing that the services of the orator should be publicly recognised and particularly his large private contributions for the public use. The Bill was ap proved, and a decree came down to the popular Assembly declaring it to be the will of the Council and People of Athens that Demosthenes should be presented with a golden crown in requital of his public services, and that proclamation of the same should be made in the theatre, at the Great Dionysian Festival. Excerpt from Demosthenes on the Crown I take great pleasure in expressing (not for the first time) my deep indebtedness to Dr Henry Jackson of Trinity College, Cambridge, who did me the inestimable service of reading and revising the proofs of the large edition. There are few pages in that volume which have not had the benefit of his criticism. For the picture of the Scythian bowman in page 280 I am indebted to the kindness of my former pupil, Miss Florence A. Gragg, who photographed the figure in the Museum at Athens.
