Imagining Far-right Terrorism explores far-right terrorism as an object of the narrative imagination in contemporary Western Europe. Western European societies are generally reluctant to think of far-right and racist violence as terrorism, but the reasons for this remain little understood. This book focuses on the extraordinarily complex case of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) in Germany, and high-profile instances of racist violence in Sweden and Norway. The author analyses the narratives surrounding far-right and racist violence, drawing on a broad range of empirical sources. Her account attributes the limits of imagining violence as far-right terrorism to elite practices of narrative control that maintain positive images of the liberal-democratic order in counterpoint to its two constitutive "others" – the far-right and racialised minorities. Situated broadly within the scholarly tradition of critical terrorism studies, the book breaks new ground in research on far-right terrorism by following its narrative traces across time, public spaces of contestation, and national borders. It also draws on material and findings originally written in German, Swedish, and Norwegian, which were previously not available in English. This much-needed volume will be of particular interest to students and researchers of terrorism and political violence, right-wing extremism, European politics, and communication studies.

This book is the product of an endless individual and collective process of mourning. It departs from the author’s mourning for her parents, their histories and struggles in Germany as Gastarbeiter, while it also engages with the political mourning of intersectional feminist movements against feminicide inCentral and South America; the struggles against state and police misogynoir violence of #SayHerName in the United States; the resistance of refugees and migrantized people against the coloniality of migration in Germany; and the intense political grief work of families, relatives, and friends who lost their loved ones in racist attacks from the 1980s until today in Germany. Bearing witness to their stories and accounts, this book explores how mourning is shaped both by its historical context and the political labor of caring commons, while it also follows the building of a conviviality infrastructure of support against migration-coloniality necropolitics, dwelling toward transformative and reparative practices of common justice.

Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Sammelbandes zeigen nicht nur die lange Tradition des Rechtsterrorismus auf, sondern auch dessen Aktualität und Brisanz. Neben der fortwährenden Gefahr, die von der gewalttätigen rechtsextremen Szene ausgeht, sind in den virtuellen Sphären rechtsextremer Online-Foren neue Pfade der Ideologisierung, Radikalisierung und Rekrutierung entstanden. Die Geschichte des Rechtsterrorismus in Deutschland reicht bis in die 1950er Jahre zurück. Seine Entwicklung muss im Kontext des gesellscha ftlichen und politischen Wandels analysiert und interpretiert werden. Eine spezifische Bedeutung hat dabei das statische, staats- und politikzentrierte Verständnis des Extremismus, das sich in Defiziten der Erkennung, Thematisierung und Bekämpfung von Phänomenen rechtsterroristischer Gewalt durch die Sicherheitsbehörden und die Justiz äußerte. Nicht nur im NSU-Komplex bleiben bis heute viele Fragen zu der Verantwortung, der Verstrickung und dem Versagen staatlicher Institutionen und Akteur*innen offen. Die rechts-motivierte Ermordung von Walter Lübcke und der antisemitische Anschlag in Halle mit zwei Todesopfern zeigen, dass sich die Kontinuität des Rechtsterrorismus in der Bundesrepublik im Jahr 2019 fortsetzte, zugleich nimmt der Rechtsterrorismus neue Formen an und stellt damit eine sehr konkrete Bedrohung dar. Der Sammelband eröffnet wissenschaft liche, juristische und zivilgesellschaft liche Perspektiven auf den Phänomenbereich.
