The book describes the historical background of and the prerequisites for the development of children's books in Sweden during the 19th century, the time when the foundation of modern Swedish children's literature was laid. From an international perspective the book deals with literary movements from the 16th century through to 1900. The children's book market is also examined including the growth of book production, translations and the work of the publishers. The graphic techniques and their initial appearance in children's book illustration in Sweden are described, and there are also sections dealing with the international trade in pictures for children's books during the 19th century and picture books imported to Sweden. Basic to the tratise are two new bibliographies of children's books in Sweden covering the period 1840-99, published in 1988 and 1996 respectively.
