Den nationale sangskat og de store, nationale forfatterskaber har gennem mere end hundrede år lært os hvad der er værd at se i Danmark. Dermed har vi også indirekte lært hvad der absolut ikke er værd at se på. Det der er værd at se på er frem for alt gammelt. Bykerner fra middelalderen, vikingeskibe eller mindesmærker fra den forhistoriske tid. Det der er værd at se på er også symboler på de store, samfundsbærende institutioner som stat og kirke. Derfor betragter man for eksempel slotte, klostre og kirker som værd at se. Endvidere er det seværdige lig med ting der indgår i den nationale erindring, og endelig har det at gøre med den finere kultur. Derfor er Dybbøl Mølle, der får os til at tænke på et afgørende øjeblik i nationens historie, værd at se. Og det samme er Det Kongelige Teater og Operaen. Det der ikke er værd at se på er alt det modsatte: Nyt i stedet for gammelt. Uden symbol- og erindringsværdi, og dermed rent praktisk. Endelig er det ikke-seværdige lig med det der er uden finkulturel værdi. Det vil sige at det er lavkulturelt eller populærkulturelt. Det paradoksale er at der i det tyvende århundrede skete to ting samtidig. På den ene side lærte generation efter generation sangskatten og den nationale litteratur at kende i skolen. På den måde lærte vi at agte det danske landskab og de steder der var gamle, symbolske og kulturelle. På den anden side byggede generation efter generation i samme periode en helt ny verden, der var spritny, aldeles praktisk og aldeles uden finkulturelle ambitioner. Den nye verden var kort og godt den diametrale modsætning til alt det man lærte at agte i skolen. Eller med andre ord: en verden skabt til foragt. Hvordan blev den verden som vores dannelsesinstitutioner lærte os at foragte egentlig skabt? Og ikke mindst: hvorfor? Hvilke konsekvenser har det for en befolkning at den bygger og bebor en verden som den ifølge sine egne dannelsesinstitutioner bør foragte? Og er den paradoksale udvikling noget man kan gøre noget ved? Det er de spørgsmål Den usynlige verden stiller – og forsøger at besvare. Den usynlige verden er en underholdende, tankevækkende og uhyre velskrevet bog, om nutidsdanskernes livsudfoldelse og geografiske selvopfattelse.

Walking Shadows focuses on the American fantastic and the American grotesque, attempting in this manner for the first time to establish an overview of and a theoretical approach to two literary modes that have often been regarded as essential to an understanding of the American cultural canon. The central importance of these two literary forms has been pointed out earlier by important theorists such as Stanley Cavell, David Reynolds, and William Van O’Connor. A number of literary works, from the beginning of the nineteenth to the end of the twentieth centuries, are taken up in order to illustrate the inherent links or family resemblances between the two modes, with special reference to the way in which a Bakhtinian reading may facilitate our appreciation of their status within the canon. These excursions into the House of Fantastic and Grotesque Fiction may be of interest not only to hardcore aficionados, but also to philosophically minded readers in general, in particular perhaps to those who have paid acute attention to debates on late twentieth and early twenty-first century post-structuralism and deconstruction (where the classic positions of Foucault, Derrida, et al. still appear to be relevant).

Contemporary society is marked and defined by the ways in which mobile goods, bodies, vehicles, objects, and data are organized, moved and staged. Against the background of the ‘mobilities turn’ this book articulates a new and emerging research field, namely that of ‘mobilities design’. The book revolves around the following research question: How are design decisions and interventions staging mobilities? It builds upon the ‘Staging Mobilities’ model (Jensen 2013) in an exploratory inquiry into the problems and potentials of the design of mobilities. The exchange value between mobilities and design research is twofold. To mobilities research this means getting closer to the ‘material’, and to engage in the creative, exploratory and experimental approaches of the design world which offer new potential for innovative research.
