Worldwide urbanization brings seemingly inescapable and uncontrollable forms of densification with it. Increasingly, cities are no longer defined by clearly visible borders. Instead they form open territories that are honeycombed with infrastructures and immaterial networks. This development requires a new understanding of density: density is not the product of piling square feet on top of one another, instead it is the result of vital connections between the different urban levels. Apart from a physical and economical dimension, density also has a social significance in particular, as a means of promoting and structuring human relations and therefore contributing to a good urban life. 'Density, Architecture, and Territory' puts forward a model of density as a tool for sustainable urban development. Based on five European urban planning projects in Saintes, Utrecht, Copenhagen, Nantes, and Bregenz, various densification strategies are presented and analyzed. Discussions with the architect Kees Christiaanse, the philosopher Marc Armengaud, the landscape architect Henri Bava, and the economist Allain Sallez round off the publication.

The Connection_ project was born with the desire to establish a cultural connection between the city of Barcelona and other European cities. It seeks to create a network of cultural links between cities to share and confront strategies on urbanism and architecture. A series of architecture exhibitions are the focus of this project that also offers other events such as conferences and meetings between universities. Each new connection will offer a new theme that will always take into account the idiosyncrasy and the cultural and architectural background of the invited city or region. The theme chosen for this first confrontation with Barcelona is "Architecture and Territory." The first set of connections will take place in Ticino, Switzerland. This Canton, with great cultural tradition, is a mainly mountainous territory which has, however, many other geographical conformations such as hilly areas and plains, valleys and lakes. This particular geography, the gradual population increase and the difficulty of finding accommodation within the larger centers, have generated a particular low-density growth.

Maybe the Global Village metaphor has never been more accurate than it is today, where societies join forces in the fight against the COVID 19 pandemic, in a global coordinated effort, possibly never tested before in the known history of Humankind. From the Introduction: Consider these two places: Walking into Green Acres, you immediately sense that you have entered an oasis-traffic noise left behind, negative urban distractions out of sight, children playing and running on the grass, adults puttering on plant-filled balconies. Signs of life and care for the environment abound. Innumerable social and physical clues communicate to visitors and residents alike a sense of home and neighborhood. This is a place that people are proud of, a place that children will remember in later years with nostalgia and affection, a place that just feels "good." Contrast this with Southside Village. Something does not feel quite right. It is hard to find your way about, to discern which are the fronts and which are the backs of the houses, to determine what is "inside" and what is "outside." Strangers cut across what might be a communal backyard. There are no signs of personalization around doors or on balconies. Few children are around; those who are outside ride their bikes in circles in the parking lot There are few signs of caring; litter, graffiti, and broken light fixtures indicate the opposite.
