Mega-sociology is the last book written by Adam Podgórecki. He was working on its final version when he died on August 18, 1998, of heart attack. The revisions he intended to make did not concern the main ideas of this book, rather he planned a thorough re-working of its structure to make their presentation more focused and effective. After much deliberation, I have decided to have the manuscript published without any editing that might have inadvertently distorted the Author’s intentions. The concept of megasociology is about making sociology relevant by placing it in the social context of specific societies and their values, and thereby, enabling a culturally appropriate, organic social action. It grew out of Podgórecki’s concern with the ‘invasion of dilettantes’ in sociology, led by ideologues, who created abstract, detached from social reality pseudo-theories designed primarily for their own aggrandizement. It was also a next step in his almost life-long search for the best way to approach the task of helping societies to live better.

Podgorecki examines oppression that results from pressures inside social groupings, large and small, effected by different normative and conformity-inducing mechanisms designed to regulate human behavior. Podgorecki provides a critical examination of the empirical findings in the most important and imaginative experimental studies of various types of oppression (including those by Milgram and Zimbardo), as well as data collected in natural settings like asylums or concentration camps. New interpretations of those findings furnish a new angle of vision requiring modification of the existing typologies of individual adaptation including the best known typology elaborated by Merton (conformity, ritualism, innovation, withdrawal, rebellion). Podgorecki goes on to trace regularities in historically recorded patterns of behavior of people living under totalitarian and post-totalitarian conditions. Finally, based on these insights and on the recent developments in sociology of law, a new theory of law is advanced, which utilizes as its important axis a conceptual differentiation between the official and intuitive law. In this book Pragati Rawat and John C. Morris identify and evaluate the impact of factors that can help explain the difference in e-participation, public participation using information and communication technology, in different countries. While cross-sectional studies have been covered, few have taken an in-depth look at cross-national studies. This book attempts to fill the gap using quantitative panel data to explore the influence of technology and institutions, and the impact of their complex relationships in a mediation and moderation analysis, on e-participation. The current study reviews the scholarly work in the field of “offline” and “online participation” to identify a set of antecedents that influence e-participation. A conceptual framework is developed, supported by the theories from the public policy and socio-technical premise. The authors utilize secondary data, primarily from the UN and World Economic Forum, for 143 countries from three waves of surveys to measure the dependent and explanatory variables. The panel data is statistically analyzed and findings reveal the role of technology as a mediator as well as a moderator for institutions’ impact on e-participation.
