Considerando-se serem as dependências químicas transtornos crônicos, podemos afirmar que seu tratamento pode oferecer bons resultados. Se levarmos em conta, no entanto, apenas as taxas de abstinência alcançadas por dependentes graves, não chegamos a 40% em seguimentos, devidamente controlados, de um ano. Portanto, há espaço tanto para os otimistas quanto para os pessimistas. A falta de suspeição diagnóstica dos casos menos graves, a prescrição de tratamentos que não consideram as especificidades da faixa etária e do gênero, e a possível presença de comorbidades são fatores relevantes para a tentativa de se aumentar as taxas de sucesso. O presente livro, fruto de grande esforço da Associação Brasileira de Estudos sobre o Álcool e outras Drogas (ABEAD), ocupa-se das comorbidades com a dependência química, assunto cuja importância é ditada pela epidemiologia. Entre os adolescentes com esse transtorno, quase 50% têm outro diagnóstico. Já entre os adultos, de 15 a 30%. O tema aqui foi desenvolvido por um grupo de autores convocados pela ABEAD para essa tarefa.
