Compared to boys, adolescent girls face an increased risk of depression and repeated recurrences throughout adulthood. This unique volume presents a comprehensive multidisciplinary framework for understanding how girls become vulnerable to mood disorders and how that vulnerability might be reduced. The contributors are leading scholars at the cutting edge of theory, research, intervention, and policy. The chapters cover new developments in the science of depression—from genes to biological, psychological, and social processes—and explore how the research is being translated into innovative prevention efforts.

Adults are increasingly concerned about the rising rate of depression in teenage girls and the frequency of alarming behaviors including wild conduct, explosive outbursts, back talking, sexual escapades, drug experimentation, and even cutting, eating disorders, and suicide attempts. The Disappearing Girl, the first book on depression in teenage girls, helps parents understand: • Why silence reflects a girl’s desperate wish for inclusion, not isolation • Subtle differences between teen angst and problem behavior • Vulnerabilities in dating, friendships, school, and families • How, if untreated, girls will carry feelings of helplessness, anger, and depression into adulthood Dr. Machoian also offers conversation topics to help girls navigate mixed messages, develop their identity, make healthy decisions, and build resilience that will empower them throughout life, as well as helping parents manage their own frustration.

Depression in Girls and Women Across the Lifespan takes a broad biopsychosocial approach to understanding the onset and experience of depression in women. The book is structured around four major life transitions: depression during puberty and the transition to adolescence; Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and a woman’s transition through monthly cycles of depression; depression during pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition to motherhood; and depression during perimenopause and the transition to menopause. Integrating cutting-edge research with a wealth of case examples and specific evidence-based interventions, the book expands our understanding of depression by taking into account the biological realities, psychological vulnerabilities, life stressors, and gendered cultural messages and expectations that intersect to shape the onset of depression in women’s lives. Written in a clear, applicable style, Depression in Girls and Women Across the Lifespan enables mental health professionals to provide effective, gender-informed, depression-focused treatments that are tailored to girls’ and women’s unique needs.

It considers the pressure on young girls to be sexualized and to look and act older than they are, the effects of consumerism and materialism, the pervasive use of social media, and the pressure to excel in all areasóstressors that can impede the development of an authentic self during this critical period of physical and emotional growth. Practical and detailed treatment interventions are provided for issues such as depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, self-injury, relationship violence, and sexual victimization. In addition, the book emphasizes the importance of early intervention to prevent problems, and the promotion of girlsí resilience to cultural pressures so they can successfully cope with complex life demands. Interpersonal Stress And Depression In Adolescent Girls written by Mary Branch Foard and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Depression in adolescence categories.

Research indicates a relation between coping strategies in response to stress and psychological outcomes, including depression (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). While there is a clear link between coping and outcomes, effectively categorizing coping strategies remains a challenge. Compas's multidimensional model of coping (Compas, Connor-Smith, Saltzman, Thomsen, & Wadsworth, 2001) is widely used; however, there are no studies replicating it using items from other coping measures. This was the first part of the current study. In addition, interpersonal stress is also associated with depression, particularly among girls (Rose & Rudolph, 2006). However, little is known about the moderating effect of coping on the relation between interpersonal stress and depression. In the second part of the current study, the replicated coping dimensions were used to test the moderating effect of coping on the relation between interpersonal stress and depression in adolescent girls. -- From the author's abstract.
