Depth Effects written by Brooke Belisle and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024 with Computational photography categories.

In this bold rewriting of visual culture, Brooke Belisle uses dimensionality to rethink the history and theory of media aesthetics. With Depth Effects, she traces A.I.-enabled techniques of computational imaging back to spatial strategies of early photography, analyzing everyday smartphone apps by way of almost-forgotten media forms. Drawing on the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Belisle explores depth both as a problem of visual representation (how can flat images depict a voluminous world?) and as a philosophical paradox (how do things cohere beyond the limits of our view?). She explains how today's depth effects continue colonialist ambitions toward totalizing ways of seeing. But she also shows how artists stage dimensionality to articulate what remains invisible and irreducible.

Many books are available that detail the basic principles of the different methods of surface characterization. On the other hand, the scientific literature provides a resource of how individual pieces of research are conducted by particular labo- tories. Between these two extremes the literature is thin but it is here that the present volume comfortably sits. Both the newcomer and the more mature scientist will find in these chapters a wealth of detail as well as advice and general guidance of the principal phenomena relevant to the study of real samples. In the analysis of samples, practical analysts have fairly simple models of how everything works. Superimposed on this ideal world is an understanding of how the parameters of the measurement method, the instrumentation, and the char- teristics of the sample distort this ideal world into something less precise, less controlled, and less understood. The guidance given in these chapters allows the scientist to understand how to obtain the most precise and understood measu- ments that are currently possible and, where there are inevitable problems, to have clear guidance as the extent of the problem and its likely behavior.

Interactive Depth Aware Effects For Stereo Image Editing written by Joshua E. Abbott and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Electronic dissertations categories.

This thesis introduces methods for adding user-guided depth-aware effects to images captured with a consumer-grade stereo camera with minimal user interaction. In particular, we present methods for highlighted depth-of-field, haze, depth-of-field, and image relighting. Unlike many prior methods for adding such effects, we do not assume prior scene models or require extensive user guidance to create such models, nor do we assume multiple input images. We also do not require specialized camera rigs or other equipment such as light-field camera arrays, active lighting, etc. Instead, we use only an easily portable and affordable consumer-grade stereo camera. The depth is calculated from a stereo image pair using an extended version of PatchMatch Stereo designed to compute not only image disparities but also normals for visible surfaces. We also introduce a pipeline for rendering multiple effects in the order they would occur physically. Each can be added, removed, or adjusted in the pipeline without having to reapply subsequent effects. Individually or in combination, these effects can be used to enhance the sense of depth or structure in images and provide increased artistic control. Our interface also allows editing the stereo pair together in a fashion that preserves stereo consistency, or the effects can be applied to a single image only, thus leveraging the advantages of stereo acquisition even to produce a single photograph.

The reduction in critical buckling load for a thin-walled cylindrical shell which occurs under repeated compression is a function of the depth to which the buckle is permitted to develop. It shows that a nickel cylinder whose R/t is of the order of 400 does not experience any load reduc tion on repeated load when the buckle depth never exceeds the thickness of the shell, and that buckle depths which are equal to or greater than 2.5t give the same results as are obtained in unrestricted buckling. It proves, too, that by using the method of buckle restriction it is possible to cause a cylindrical shell to buckle uniformly over its entire length. (Author).

Spatial And Photometric Factors Modulating The Effect Of Depth On Lightness written by Ana Radonjić and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Visual perception categories.

According to the coplanar ratio principle (CRP), when the luminance range in the image is larger than 30:1 the lightness of a target surface depends on the luminance ratio between that target and its adjacent, coplanar neighbor. This conclusion was based on experiments (Gilchrist, 1977) using a dihedral corner display in which a change in the perceived spatial position of a target produced large changes in its perceived lightness, with no significant change in the observer's retinal image. Using variations of this dihedral display, a series of experiments was conducted to test a group of conflicting claims made by CRP, the anchoring theory (Gilchrist et al., 1999) and other writers (e.g. Kardos, 1934, Howe, 2006) concerning the role of coplanarity, adjacency, surroundedness, articulation, and luminance range. Generally consistent with the predictions of the anchoring theory, the results show the following: (1) Articulation can substantially increase the depth effect. (2) Target lightness depends, not simply on its adjacent coplanar luminance, but on the highest luminance in its plane, irrespective of its position relative to the target. (3) When two or more levels of illumination are present on a plane, target lightness depends on the highest luminance in its framework of illumination, not on the highest luminance in its plane. (4) The size of the depth effect depends on the luminance ratio between the highest luminance values in the two planes, not on the overall luminance range across the planes. Thus strong depth effects can be obtained with a luminance range no greater than 30:1. (5) Surface continuity within a plane is necessary for the operation of coplanar ratios, although surroundedness can partially substitute for continuity, but only within the brightly illuminated plane.

Effects Of Pre Release Cracks In High Strength Prestressed Girders written by Tina Ann Wyffels and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Girders categories.

This research project investigated the effects of pre-release cracks on girder camber, flexural cracking capacity, and steel stress ranges. The research included a parametric study investigating stress ranges in the prestressing strands in uncracked, cracked and partially cracked girder sections to determine if steel fatigue was a concern. An analytical study also was performed, which modeled several pre-release cracks, including models of two experimental girders that developed pre-release cracks, to determine the effect of various cracks on girder stress and camber. The study concluded that steel fatigue in the prestressing strand is a concern in girders that become cracked in service.
