Diese bedeutenden Verm chtnisse der kl sterlichen Kultur geben uns einen Hauch von der Vergangenheit wieder und rufen gleichzeitig unz hlige Fragen hervor. Wie haben wir uns den allt glichen Betrieb um die Klosterkirche im fr hen Mittelalter vorzustellen? Welcher Anblick bietet sich dem Besucher, der das Kloster zum ersten Mal betritt? Wie lebten die Bewohner dort? Wie sah ihr Alltag aus? Das sind grundlegenden Fragen, die uns hier interessieren und die nun diese Untersuchung zu beantworten versucht. Als Grundlage der Bearbeitung steht ein neuer methodischer Ansatz im Vordergrund, bei dem das u ere Erscheinungsbild eines Klosters in der Zeit zwischen 800 und 1100 als Informationstr ger fungiert. Die Erschlie ung der funktionalen Lebenszusammenh nge erfolgt von der Topographie der Anlage aus. Das Erscheinungsbild eines Klosters setzt uns ber Wesensz ge und Organisation des Alltags der Bewohner in Kenntnis, legt das Zusammenspiel der verschiedenen Lebensbereiche innerhalb der Abtei und die unmittelbare Lebensumwelt der M nche offen. Dazu dient hier der Klosterplan von St. Gallen. Anhand des "St. Galler Klosterplans" soll der Bauplan eines Gro klosters studiert und mit Leben erf llt werden. Jeder Raum und jeder Wirkungsbereich in einem fr hmittelalterlichen Gro kloster, alle seine Bewohner in ihrem T tigkeitsfeld bilden das Objekt der Darstellung. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung findet sich demnach der M nch und sein Wirkungskreis. Es geht um die unmittelbare Umwelt der M nche, die Lage sowie den Aufbau des Klosters und um die internen und externen Verflechtungen eines mittelalterlichen Gro klosters. Invoking the notion of ‘cosmopolitics’ from Bruno Latour and Isabelle Stengers, this volume shows how and why cities constitute privileged sites for studying the search for and composition of common worlds of cohabitation. A cosmopolitical approach to the city focuses on the multiple assemblages of human and nonhuman actors that constitute urban common worlds, and on the conflicts and compromises that arise among different ways of assembling the city. It brings into view how urban worlds are always in the process of being subtly transformed, destabilized, decentred, questioned, criticized, or even destroyed. As such, it opens up novel questions as to the gradual and contested composition of urban life, thereby forcing us to pay more explicit attention to the politics of urban assemblages. Focusing on changing sanitation infrastructures and practices, emerging forms of urban activism, processes of economic restructuring, transformations of the built environment, changing politics of expert-based urban planning, as well as novel practices for navigating the urban everyday, the contributions gathered in this volume explore different conceptual and empirical configurations of urban cosmopolitics: agencements, assemblies, atmospheres. Taken together, the volume thus aims at introducing and specifying a novel research program for rethinking urban studies and politics, in ways that remain sensitive to the multiple agencies, materialities, concerns and publics that constitute any urban situation.

The communist German Democratic Republic, founded in 1949 in the Soviet-occupied zone of post-war Germany is, for many people, epitomized by the Berlin Wall; Soviet tanks and surveillance by the secret security police, the Stasi, appear to be central. But is this really all there is to the GDR1s history? How did people come to terms with their situation and make new lives behind the Wall? When the social history of the GDR in the 1960s and 1970s is explored, new patterns become evident. A fragile stability emerged in a period characterized by 'consumer socialism', international recognition and détente. Growing participation in the micro-structures of power, and conformity to the unwritten rules of an increasingly predictable system, suggest increasing accommodation to dominant norms and conceptions of socialist 'normality'. By exploring the ways in which lower-level functionaries and people at the grass roots contributed to the formation and transformation of the GDR from industry and agriculture, through popular sport and cultural life, to the passage of generations and varieties of social experience the contributors collectively develop a more complex approach to the history of East Germany.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, German clockwork automata were collected, displayed, and given as gifts throughout the Holy Roman, Ottoman, and Mughal Empires. In Animating Empire, Jessica Keating recounts the lost history of six such objects and reveals the religious, social, and political meaning they held. The intricate gilt, silver, enameled, and bejeweled clockwork automata, almost exclusively crafted in the city of Augsburg, represented a variety of subjects in motion, from religious figures to animals. Their movements were driven by gears, wheels, and springs painstakingly assembled by clockmakers. Typically wound up and activated by someone in a position of power, these objects and the theological and political arguments they made were highly valued by German-speaking nobility. They were often given as gifts and as tribute payment, and they played remarkable roles in the Holy Roman Empire, particularly with regard to courtly notions about the important early modern issues of universal Christian monarchy, the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, the encroachment of the Ottoman Empire, and global trade. Demonstrating how automata produced in the Holy Roman Empire spoke to a convergence of historical, religious, and political circumstances, Animating Empire is a fascinating analysis of the animation of inanimate matter in the early modern period. It will appeal especially to art historians and historians of early modern Europe. Jahrhunderts im Westen begangen haben’. Ihm entgegnete ein Shanghaier Städteplaner in bestem Amerikanisch: ‘Wir haben gar nicht die Zeit für eure westlichen Probleme. Die Not von mehreren Millionen, der unerhörte Druck der Bedürfnisse, dem unsere Stadt ausgesetzt ist, lässt nur große, schnelle Lösungen zu’. Hierin spiegelt sich die aktuelle Situation der Hafenstadt wieder - eine regierungsunmittelbare dynamische Riesen-Metropole, an der Ostküste Chinas gelegen. Über achtzehn Millionen Menschen leben bereits in dieser Stadt, die immer mehr an Größe, Zeitgeist und Bedeutung gewinnt. Beeindruckend entfalten sich auf einer Fläche von 6340 km2 enorme Wachstumsraten und ein scheinbar unaufhaltsamer Bauboom.
