Ein Satz wie Egon ist ein Buch am lesen eröffnet dem Deutschen den Bereich der verbalen Aspektualität. Die am-Konstruktionen werden in der Allgemeinheit aber mit großer Skepsis beurteilt, indem sie als sprachliche Normabweichung gelten. Solch eine Sichtweise ist aus dem Blickwinkel des Autors nicht länger haltbar. Das Pennsylvaniadeutsche (PeD), die Sprache der deutschstämmigen Amischen in den USA, bietet zielführende Hinweise. Das PeD hat bislang keine präskriptive Normierung hervorgebracht, sodass sich ein vollständiges morphologisches Paradigma der Verlaufsform etabliert hat. Der am-Progressiv ist ein einmaliger Nachweis einer grammatikalisierten Einheit, welche es in keiner westgermanischen Sprache in dieser Form gibt, außer im Englischen.
