This work focuses on the efforts toward reforming women's dress that took place in Europe and America in the latter half of the 18th century and the first decade of the 20th century, and the types of garments adopted by women to overcome the challenges posed by fashionable dress. It considers the many advocates for reform and examines their motives, their arguments for change, and how they promoted improvements in women's fashion. Though there was no single overarching dress reform movement, it reveals similarities among the arguments posed by diverse groups of reformers, including especially the equation of reform with an ideal image of improved health. Drawing on a variety of primary and secondary sources in the USA and Europe - including the popular press, advice books for women, allopathic and alternative medical literature, and books on aesthetics, art, health, and physical education - the text makes a significant contribution to costume studies, social history, and women's studies.

Feminist Space: Exhibitions and Discourses between Philadelphia and Berlin, 1865-1912 investigates the relationship between gender and the production of public space, namely the exhibitions of feminine bourgeois culture that were created in Berlin between 1865 and 1912. This book demonstrates that these exhibitions gave expression to evolving bourgeois feminist discourses that proposed an expanded public sphere, containing separate and equal, masculine and feminine qualities. In addition, these feminine exhibitions were enriched by contact with and participation in the Woman's Buildings constructed at the 1876 (Philadelphia) and 1893 (Chicago) American world exhibitions, as well as the ideals of the German applied arts movement. As the exhibitions of feminine bourgeois culture were hugely popular and financially successful events, they attracted attention and stimulated discourse and debate. This book proposes that German bourgeois feminists created unique public spaces, which can be seen as contributing to the seminal architectural culture, which emerged in Germany prior to 1914.

The term 'Islamic cities' has been used to refer to cities of the Islamic world, centring on the Middle East. Academic scholarship has tended to link the cities of the Islamic world with Islam as a religion and culture, in an attempt to understand them as a whole in a unified and homogenous way. Examining studies (books, articles, maps, bibliographies) of cities which existed in the Middle East and Central Asia in the period from the rise of Islam to the beginning of the 20th century, this book seeks to examine and compare Islamic cities in their diversity of climate, landscape, population and historical background. Coordinating research undertaken since the nineteenth century, and comparing the historiography of the Maghrib, Mashriq, Turkey, Iran and Central Asia, Islamic Urbanism provides a fresh perspective on issues that have exercised academic concern in urban studies and highlights avenues for future research.

Das Gebäude der Freien Universität Berlin (Candilis, Josic, Woods, Schiedhelm, 1963-73) ist ein bahnbrechendes Werk in der Tradition der heroischen Moderne. So werden nicht nur die bei diesem Gebäude umgesetzten technischen Innovationen, sein utopischer Charakter und sein Einfluss auf die internationale Entwicklung im Hochschulbau der sechziger Jahre des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts untersucht, sondern auch die (personellen, politischen und mentalen) Ursachen für die Vielzahl der technischen Probleme, die die Ausführung des Gebäudes kompromittierten und schließlich einen dunklen Schatten auf seine Reputation legten. Das in jüngster Zeit wiedererwachte Interesse an der FU Berlin und den Architekten Candilis, Josic, Woods und Schiedhelm zeigt, wie die Relevanz dieses Gebäudes mit seiner kompakten Synthese von komplexer Konzeption und tektonischer Innovation in Verbindung mit differenzierten baugeschichtlichen Bezügen jenseits von nostalgischen Formen für Architekten, Lehrende, Studenten und Theoretiker fortdauert.
