Worin liegt der Unterschied zwischen einer Kommunikation, die in einer face-to-face- Interaktion stattfindet (beispielsweise zwischen zwei Freunden, die an einem Tisch sitzen und sich unterhalten) und der Kommunikation im Internet-Chat1? Was sind die Gemeinsamkeiten? Und warum greifen immer mehr junge Menschen auf die letztgenannte Kommunikationsform zurück? Liegt in der zunehmenden Nutzung von Computern als Medium sozialer Interaktion eine Gefahr oder ist es im Gegenteil eine Bereicherung für das zwischenmenschliche Zusammenleben? Mit möglichen Antworten auf diese Fragen wird sich diese Arbeit beschäftigen. Um einen sinnvollen Vergleich beider Kommunikationsformen, face-to-face-Kommunikation versus Chatten, herauszuarbeiten, ist es zunächst notwendig, grundlegende Definitionen festzuhalten und die zentrale Bedeutung des Begriffes „Kommunikation“ zu klären. Natürlich ist dies in einer umfassenden und allen Theorien gerechtwerdenden Art im Rahmen dieser Arbeit nicht möglich, gleichwohl werde ich im ersten Teil der Arbeit auf grundlegende Theorien von Kommunikation eingehen (Kapitel 1 und 2), um dann am Ende in einem Vergleich von face-to-face-Interaktion und computervermittelter Kommunikation (cvK) zu Aussagen und Konsequenzen bezüglich meiner Ausgangsfragen zu kommen. Bei dem kommunikationstheoretischen Teil im Kapitel 2 berufe ich mich im wesentlichen auf die Arbeit von Watzlawick/ Beavin und Jackson: Menschliche Kommunikation2. Die ihr zugrundeliegende Systemtheorie, nach der Kommunikation nicht als Einzelmerkmal erklärt und behandelt werden kann, bildet den Ausgangspunkt für die von Watzlawick aufgestellten Axiomen, auf die ich näher eingehen werde. Zusätzlich stelle ich das Kommunikationsmodell nach Friedemann Schulz von Thun dar, der auf Paul Watzlawicks Theorien aufbauend sein Konzept der vier Seiten einer Nachricht begründet (siehe Schulz von Thun, 2001, S. 13 -14). This book explores the boundary between «the private» and «the public» on Social Network Sites based on the sociability framework. The author analyses the roles of social norms and influences, benefits, and risks/costs, on the behaviors of SNSs users through models based on Social Exchange Theory, Social Penetration Theory and Communication Privacy Management Theory. She reviews different notions of «the private» and «the public» and selects the sociability framework to investigate the distinction between private and public. The author uses this theoretical framework to conduct online surveys and interviews with selected SNSs users in Germany and China and concludes that the clear boundary of «the private» and «the public» on SNSs is a result of acts of disclosure and/or withdrawal of personal information and political opinions. Globalization and mediatization contribute to similarities among different countries but do not erase the differences in their respective boundaries.
