Der von Gott erfüllte Mensch wird im Christentum immer seltener. Der Glaube im Inneren des Menschen wird zunehmend entleert und in der Folge leeren sich dementsprechend auch im Äußeren die Kirchengebäude. Der gotterfüllte Mensch war einst der enthusiastische Mensch. Der ursprünglichen Wortbedeutung nach war Enthusiasmus Gotterfülltheit. Dieser besondere Enthusiasmus ist dabei, seine ursprüngliche Lebensquelle, das ist der Geist Gottes, im Gläubigen zu verlieren. Der Grund für diesen drohenden Verlust ist nicht in der Schrift anzusiedeln, sondern im Zeitgeist, was in den vorliegenden Tischgesprächen deutlich werden soll. Tatsächlich ist die Schrift imstande, den Glauben mit dieser Gotterfülltheit anzureichern, sofern man von ihrem besonderen Enthusiasmus ergriffen wird. Vielleicht können die Gespräche dazu einen Beitrag leisten - um mehr geht es ihnen nicht, aber auch nicht um weniger.

Der Apostel Thomas begab sich nach Kreuzigung und Auferstehung Jesu nach Indien, um das Evangelium dort zu verkunden. Zu dieser Zeit herrschte in Indien bereits seit Jahrhunderten die Hochkultur des vedischen Brahmanismus und seit etwa 250 v. Chr. auch der Buddhismus. Wir wissen nicht, in welcher Gestalt Thomas den Indern die christliche Botschaft nahegebracht hat; das Evangelium, das seinen Namen tragt, ist als Schriftstuck dort nicht verbreitet worden. Und doch scheint es mit einer ganzen Reihe von Lehrsatzen nach Asien zu weisen. Das vorliegende Buch geht diesen Hinweisen nach und wirft mit dem Thomasevangelium einen Blick in die asiatische Kultur, lasst sich zugleich von Philosophie, Naturwissenschaft und weiteren apokryphen Schriften inspirieren, wobei samtliche Texte auf die biblischen Schriften hin gelesen werden.
