Sein Schriftprogramm Univers und die zum ISO-Standard erklärte, maschinenlesbare Schrift OCR-B sind ebenso Meilensteine wie die zur Frutiger weiterentwickelte Schrift der Pariser Flughäfen – ein Qualitätsstandard für Signalisationsschriften. Mit den Corporate Types prägte er Firmenauftritte wie den der japanischen Kosmetiklinie Shiseido. Insgesamt entstanden rund 50 Schriften, darunter Ondine, Méridien, Avenir und Vectora. Auf Gesprächen mit Frutiger basierend sowie auf umfangreichen Recherchen in Frankreich, England, Deutschland und der Schweiz, zeichnet die Publikation den gestalterischen Werdegang des Schriftkünstlers exakt nach. Es werden alle Schriften – vom Entwurf bis zur Vermarktung – abgebildet sowie mit Bezug zu Technik und zu artverwandten Schriften analysiert. Bisher unveröffentlichte, nicht realisierte Schriften sowie über 100 Logos vervollständigen das Bild. Mit dieser zweiten Auflage, einer korrigierten und durch einen Index erweiterten Studienausgabe, lässt sich Frutigers Werk noch besser erschliessen.

The bibliography offers information on research about writing and written language over the past 50 years. No comprehensive bibliography on this subject has been published since Sattler's (1935) handbook. With a selection of some 27,500 titles it covers the most important literature in all scientific fields relating to writing. Emphasis has been placed on the interdisciplinary organization of the bibliography, creating many points of common interest for literacy experts, educationalists, psychologists, sociologists, linguists, cultural anthropologists, and historians. The history of printing, books, and libraries, is confined only to a limited extent within the boundaries of individual countries. There are, indeed, few historical developments which have played a more universal role, in reaction against all kinds of particularism, than type design, printing, book production, publishing, illustration, binding, librarianship, journal ism, and related subjects. Their history should be assessed and studied primarily in an international, not in a local, context. The bibliographical resources, however, which the historian of these sub jects has at his disposal correspond hardly at all to the essentially inter national character of the object of his studies. Since the appearance of the retrospective bibliography of BIG MORE and WYMAN, covering the subject comprehensively up to r88o, the only current bibliography has been the lnternationale Bibliographie des Buck-und Bi bliothekswesens. Covering a representative part of newly published liter ature, it appeared from rgz8, but did not survive the Second World War. More recently, several useful, but limited, bibliographies have appeared.

Summary his book was written primarily for people who intend or wish to develop new machines for the output of typefaces. It is practical to categorize equipment into three groups for which digital alphabets are required - 1) display devices, 2) typesetting machines and 3) numerically controlled (NC) machines. Until now, development of typefaces has been overly dependent upon the design of the respective machine on which it was to be used. This need not be the case. Digitization of type should be undertaken in two steps: the preparation of a database using hand-digitization, and the subsequent automatic generation of machine formats by soft scanning, through the use of a computer-based program. Digital formats for typefaces are ideally suited to system atic ordering, as are coding techniques. In this volume, various formats are investigated, their properties discussed and rela tive production requirements analyzed. Appendices provide readers additional information, largely on digital formats for typeface storage introduced by the IKARUS system. This book was composed in Latino type, developed by Hermann Zapf from his Melior for URW in 1990. Compo sition was accomplished on a Linotronic 300, as well as on an Agfa 9400 typesetter using PostScript. v Preface Preface his book was brought out by URW Publishers in 1986 with the title «Digital Formats for Typefaces;). It was translated into English in 1987, Japanese in 1989 and French in 1991.

Recent Developments in Graphic Arts Research contains the proceedings of the 10th International Conference of Printing Research Institutes, held in Krems, Austria in June 1969. Contributors explore the developments in graphic arts research, including lithographic fountain solutions; the dichromate-sensitized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coatings used for lithographic platemaking; the application of electrostatic assist technique to gravure printing; and the physical drying of printing inks in drying systems. This book consists of 23 papers; the first of which investigates photochemical reactions in PVA coatings sensitized with hexavalent chromium. Attention of this book then turns to the influence of the behavior of the water-air boundary on the mechanism of lithography; the functions of isopropanol as it is used in lithographic fountain solutions; and the factors that affect the physical drying of printing inks in drying systems. Also discussed are the effects of rolling speed, surface friction, blanket tension, the presence of ink, and blanket indentation on the surface speed changes that occur in the blanket-plate nip in offset printing. This book concludes by appraising the printing developments in the United States. This text will be of interest to graphic arts students and professionals.
