Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Kunst - Malerei, Note: 1,6, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (Kunstgeschichtliches Seminar), Veranstaltung: Von Courbet bis Leibl – Zum Realismusbegriff, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Bekanntgabe der Erfindung des ersten praktikablen fotografischen Verfahrens, der Daguerreotypie, in Paris 1839 sollte nicht ohne Folgen für die künstlerische Wahrnehmung und Praxis des 19. Jahrhunderts bleiben. Die Erfindung der Fotografie stieß auf einen für sie vorteilhaften Zeitgeist. So erschien im selben Jahr die erste Veröffentlichung von Auguste Comptes “Philosophie positive”, die den Wissenschaftsbegriff des 19. Jahrhunderts als “Herleitung der Gesetze aus der Beschreibung des Gegebenen” und sinnlich Erfahrbaren definieren sollte. Wichtigster Gegenstand der positivistischen Philosophie war neben der Soziologie die exakte Erforschung der Natur, die jegliche theologischen und metaphysischen Erklärungsmuster ersetzen sollte. Schnell in den Dienst der Wissenschaften, wie der Medizin, Ethnologie und Geologie gestellt, machte die Fotografie bislang Unsichtbares sichtbar, veränderte und schärfte zugleich so die Wahrnehmung der zeitgenössischen Wirklichkeit. Die von den Wissenschaften angestrebte Objektivität sollte auch für den Künstler zum Paradigma avancieren, weshalb diese die Fotografie mit ihrer vermeintlichen Exaktheit der Realitätsdarstellung zunächst als Bedrohung für den eigenen Berufsstand empfanden. So sahen sich die Künstler letztlich zur Neudefinierung ihrer künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen gezwungen und bemächtigten sich letztlich des neuen Mediums als künstlerisches Hilfsmittel. Die Maler fanden in der Fotografie die Möglichkeit, sich in kürzester Zeit eine Sammlung an Naturstudien anlegen zu können, die, in traditioneller Manier geschaffen, mit hohem zeitlichen Aufwand, als auch Modellkosten verbunden, dabei aber mit geringerer Vollkommenheit zu erreichen gewesen wären. Die Fotografie erleichterte damit erheblich den Arbeitsprozeß des Künstlers, zumal die Herstellung von Naturstudien ausschließlich professionellen Fotografen vorbehalten war. Diese wiederum sahen neben der Portraitfotografie, das Anfertigen von Vorlagenstudien zunächst als ihre wichtigste Aufgabe an, in der sie die Möglichkeit zur Aufwertung ihres Handwerks als Kunst sahen. Ab 1850 ist folglich eine blühende Bilderindustrie mit fotografischen Vorlagenstudien zu verzeichnen, die, über Buch-, Graphik und Kunsthandel vertrieben, als Musterblätter letztlich auch Eingang in die Kunstakademien, sowie in die Künstlerateliers fanden.

The need for the portrayal of the individual identity is not a modern invention: the idealization of the sitter was already a matter of course in eighteenth and nineteenth century portrait painting. This edited collection is a major contribution to the current development of a ‘material turn’ in the social sciences and humanities. It does so by exploring new understandings of how power is made up and exercised by examining the role of material infrastructures in the organization of state power and the role of material cultural practices in the organization of colonial forms of governance. A diverse range of historical examples is drawn on in illustrating these concerns – from the role of territorial engineering projects in seventeenth-century France through the development of the postal system in nineteenth-century Britain to the relations between the state and road-building in contemporary Peru, for example. The colonial contexts examined are similarly varied, ranging from the role of photographic practices in the constitution of colonial power in India and the measurement of the bodies of the colonized in French colonial practices to the part played by the relations between museums and expeditions in the organization of Australian forms of colonial rule. These specific concerns are connected to major critical re-examination of the limits of the earlier formulations of cultural materialism and the logic of the ‘cultural turn’.
