Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Sociology - Media, Art, Music, grade: 1,7, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: A lot of research has been done that examined how Black women are presented in Hip-Hop songs by male artists. Especially rap music received much criticism, because it implied negative representations of women. Yet, how black female MC’s represent themselves is a topic that still needs more investigation. In the rare moments when women take the stage, it is noteworthy to examine the message of their songs. Therefore, this study is concerned with the question, in how far black female rappers make use of their femininity and sexuality from the beginning of Hip-Hop music until today.

Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1 (A), LMU Munich (Institute for English Philology), course: Hauptseminar zur Exkursion: Shakespeare: Hamlet, King John, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, 8 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The assassination of Julius Caesar was probably one of those few moments that literally changed the course of history. Many historians agree that Caesar might have been just another military dictator such as the generals Sulla and Marius, who are, in comparison with Caesar, unknown; a successful general, but incompetent at reforming the Roman res publica1 . The assassination of the title character is also the central moment in Shakespeare’s drama “Julius Caesar“. His death causes the change of scene (away from Rome) and the change from a relatively stable res publica to civil war. The play presents the major protagonists of these events: Casca, Cassius, Brutus, Caesar, Marc Antony and, to a lesser degree, the Roman public. The Roman people are a background before which the main characters act and by whomthey (i.e. the people) are manipulated more or less successfully. The reasons the assassins and their antagonists have, pretend to have or do not have for what they do become apparent in what they tell the man-in-the-street. Occasionally, when we hear them talk to a close friend or to themselves, we find matters are not as simple as the public is made to believe. Brutus has doubts about the attack, Cassius‘ aim is not the welfare of the res publica, Marc Antony fakes friendship with the conspirators. We see that there are certain political as well as moral ambiguities in the assassination of Julius Caesar as Shakespeare presents it. In this paper, we will first look at the Roman people as the background, then examine the character and motives of Casca, Cassius and finally Brutus. [...] 1 I use the expression “res publica“ because its English equivalent, the “common-wealth“, has other connotations; I also tried to avoid the word “state“.

Communicating Gender written by Suzanne Romaine and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-10-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Taking a cross-disciplinary approach, Suzanne Romaine's main concern is to show how language and discourse play key roles in understanding and communicating gender and culture. In addition to linguistics--which provides the starting point and central focus of the book--she draws on the fields of anthropology, biology, communication, education, economics, history, literary criticism, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. The text covers the "core" areas in the study of language and gender, including how and where gender is indexed in language, how men and women speak, how children acquire gender differentiated language, and sexism in language and language reform. Although most of the examples are drawn primarily from English, other European languages and non-European languages, such as Japanese are considered. The text is written in an accessible way so that no prior knowledge of linguistics is necessary to understand the chapters containing linguistic analysis. Each chapter is followed by exercises and discussion questions to facilitate the book's use as a classroom text. The author reviews scholarly treatments of gender, and then uses her own data material from the corpora of spoken and written English usage. Special features include an examination of contemporary media sources such as newspapers, advertising, and television; a discussion of women's speculative fiction; a study of gender and advertising, with special attention paid to the role played by language in these domains; and a review of French feminist thought, particularly as it relates to the issue of language reform.
