Der Essinger Kriegerverein von 1813 ist einer der ersten Kriegervereine in unserer Gegend. Seine frühe Entstehung verdankt er der langen Tradition eines ehemaligen Schützenvereins, der seit 1585 nachzuweisen ist, als die Brüder Sebastian und Georg Wolf von Woellwarth die erste Essinger Schützenordnung erließen. In der Württembergischen Kriegerzeitung von 1931 ist die Fahne des Kriegervereins Essingen als vermutlich älteste Fahne württembergischer Militärvereine abgebildet. Nach der Machtübernahme durch die Nationalsozialisten wird 1935 aus dem Militärverein eine Kriegerkameradschaft im NS-Reichskriegerbund. 1945 erfolgt die endgültige Auflösung aller noch existierenden Militär-, Krieger- und Veteranenvereine. 1871 wird auch in Lauterburg ein Krieger- und Veteranenverein gegründet, der zur Jahrhundertwende besonders aktiv ist. Der Verein erlischt nach dem Tod des letzten Mitgliedes um 1930. Die Vereinsfahne "Veteranenverein Lauterburg 1900" befindet sich heute im Dorfmuseum Essingen.

By the early middle ages vernacular aristocratic traditions of heroic narration were firmly established in Western and Northern Europe. Although there are regional, linguistic and formal differences, one can observe a number of similarities. Oral literature disseminates a range of themes that are shared by narratives in most parts of the continent. In all the European regions, this tradition of heroic narration came into contact with Christianity, which led to modifications. Similar processes of adaptation and transformation can be traced everywhere in this field of early European vernacular narrative. But with the increasing specialization of academic fields over the last half century, inter-disciplinary dialogue has become increasingly difficult. The volume is a contribution to renew the inter-disciplinary dialogue about common themes, topics and motifs in Nordic, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Germanic literature, and about the different methodologies to explore them.
