Die Lektüre des Ersten Petrusbriefs gewinnt für christliche Gemeinden der Gegenwart wie auch für einzelne Christen schon allein dadurch besondere Relevanz, dass sie zunehmend diasporale Erfahrungen teilen. Bei einer solchen Einschätzung der Situation ist weniger ein konfessionell geprägter Diaspora-Begriff im Blick, sondern die Situierung der Glaubenden in der Welt. Daher können die Beobachtungen am Text des Ersten Petrusbriefes auch der Selbstvergewisserung und Identitätsstiftung gegenwärtiger Gemeinden dienlich sein. Mit seiner nüchternen Selbsteinschätzung der vorläufigen Befindlichkeit von Christusgläubigen des ausgehenden 1. Jh. und ihrer theologischen Deutung war das Schreiben immer wieder dienlich, die eigene – zuweilen in besonderer Weise herausfordernde – Situation anzunehmen und konstruktiv zu bewältigen. Das kann Auswertungsversuche für diasporale Gegebenheiten der Kirche unserer Tage – im Blick auf die einzelnen Christen wie auch auf Gemeinden (so klein sie auch sein mögen) – ermutigen und bestärken; vor allem auch dadurch, dass identitätsstiftende Angebote bereitgestellt werden. Christusgläubige stehen heute an vielen Orten vor der Aufgabe, Minderheiten-Situationen oder Fremdheitserfahrungen anzunehmen und gleichzeitig den jeweiligen Gesellschaften gegenüber, in denen sie sich vorfinden, aufgeschlossen zu begegnen, vor allem aber, gesprächsbereit zu bleiben – durchaus auch über die Inhalte ihres Glaubens und die daraus erwachsende Lebenspraxis. Der vorliegende Kommentar erscheint 43 Jahre nach dem von Norbert Brox vorgelegten EKK-Band (1979) und nimmt – im Anschluss an dieses bahnbrechende Werk – die internationale Forschung der vergangenen Jahrzehnte auf, wobei neben der philologischen Arbeit Perspektiven der Sozialgeschichte, der Metaphern-Forschung und der Wirkungsgeschichte besondere Aufmerksamkeit erfahren.

This study examines the varieties and continuities of ethical exhortations and ideals in the Jewish and Christian traditions (c. 200 BCE-100 CE) that fall under the rubric of non-retaliation. One of the principal conclusions of this thought-provoking work is that a critical factor in determining the shape of non-retaliatory ethics is whether the exhortation is applied to relations within the local and/or elect community or to relations with oppressors of the elect community. Many refer to 1 Peter as an exegetical stepchild within the New Testament; that is, it does not receive the same attention as the Pauline writings, the Gospels, or the Johannine literature.
