Johnsons Roman kreist um die Jahrestage einer Familiengeschichte, festgemacht an einem Jahr im Leben und Bewusstsein von Gesine Cresspahl, der Tochter des Kunsttischlers Heinrich Cresspahl, 1933 im mecklenburgischen Jerichow geboren. Gesine ist auf der Suche nach ihren Wurzeln, angetrieben von der Frage, wer sie ist und woher sie kommt. Lebte sie vorher in D sseldorf, fasst sie 1961 den Entschluss, mit ihrer Tochter Marie, geboren 1957, Deutschland zu verlassen. In New York angekommen, bernimmt sie einen Posten in einer gro en Bank, den sie in Aussicht auf einen Aufstieg begleitet. Die kleine Marie wird schon bald zu einem Kind der Oberen Westseite von Manhattan. Uwe Johnson macht seine Protagonistin Gesine Cresspahl zum Zuordnungspunkt seiner Familiengeschichte. Johnson kreiert Lebensl ufe und bildet deren Verwandlung in Todesf lle ab. Er zeigt auf, wie Menschen von der Geschichte als Menschenmaterial verbraucht werden. Diesen Vernichtungsprozess setzt er nicht in das Medium einer entindividualisierenden Sprache um, vielmehr bezweckt er Widerstand durch Sprache. Uwe Johnson beschreibt bed chtig und keinen Umweg der Genauigkeit scheuend. W hrend Gewalt wahllos um sich greift, kommt es ihm auf die noch so kleinen Unterschiede an: "Seine staunend, z rtlich beschreibende Sprache m chte, ob in New York oder Jerichow, noch jeden Blick, jede Kopfbewegung, jeden Vogelfl gelschlag, jedes Regen- oder Verkehrsger usch, jedes Z gern in einer Stimme zu etwas ganz und gar Unverwechselbarem ernennen." Speaking the Unspeakable in Postwar Germany is an interdisciplinary study of a diverse set of public speeches given by major literary and cultural figures in the 1950s and 1960s. Through close readings of canonical speeches by Hannah Arendt, Theodor W. Adorno, Ingeborg Bachmann, Martin Buber, Paul Celan, Uwe Johnson, Peter Szondi, and Peter Weiss, Sonja Boos demonstrates that these speakers both facilitated and subverted the construction of a public discourse about the Holocaust in postwar West Germany. The author's analysis of original audio recordings of the speech events (several of which will be available on a companion website) improves our understanding of the spoken, performative dimension of public speeches.While emphasizing the social constructedness of discourse, experience, and identity, Boos does not neglect the pragmatic conditions of aesthetic and intellectual production—most notably, the felt need to respond to the breach in tradition caused by the Holocaust. The book thereby illuminates the process by which a set of writers and intellectuals, instead of trying to mend what they perceived as a radical break in historical continuity or corroborating the myth of a "new beginning," searched for ways to make this historical rupture rhetorically and semantically discernible and literally audible.

This volume, occasioned by the centenary of the Fritz Haber Institute, formerly the Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, covers the institute's scientific and institutional history from its founding until the present. The institute was among the earliest established by the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, and its inauguration was one of the first steps in the development of Berlin-Dahlem into a center for scientific research. Its establishment was made possible by an endowment from Leopold Koppel, granted on the condition that Fritz Haber, well-known for his discovery of a method to synthesize ammonia from its elements, be made its director. The history of the institute has largely paralleled that of 20th-century Germany. It undertook controversial weapons research during World War I, followed by a "Golden Era" during the 1920s, in spite of financial hardships. Under the National Socialists it experienced a purge of its scientific staff and a diversion of its research into the service of the new regime, accompanied by a breakdown in its international relations. In the immediate aftermath of World War II it suffered crippling material losses, from which it recovered slowly in the post-war era. In 1953, shortly after taking the name of its founding director, the institute joined the fledgling Max Planck Society. During the 1950s and 60s, the institute supported diverse researches into the structure of matter and electron microscopy in a territorially insular and politically precarious West-Berlin. In subsequent decades, as both Berlin and the Max Planck Society underwent significant changes, the institute reorganized around a board of coequal scientific directors and a renewed focus on the investigation of elementary processes on surfaces and interfaces, topics of research that had been central to the work of Fritz Haber and the first "Golden Era" of the institute.

The Architecture of Ruins: Designs on the Past, Present and Future identifies an alternative and significant history of architecture from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first century, in which a building is designed, occupied and imagined as a ruin. This design practice conceives a monument and a ruin as creative, interdependent and simultaneous themes within a single building dialectic, addressing temporal and environmental questions in poetic, psychological and practical terms, and stimulating questions of personal and national identity, nature and culture, weather and climate, permanence and impermanence and life and death. Conceiving a building as a dialogue between a monument and a ruin intensifies the already blurred relations between the unfinished and the ruined and envisages the past, the present and the future in a single architecture. Structured around a collection of biographies, this book conceives a monument and a ruin as metaphors for a life and means to negotiate between a self and a society. Emphasising the interconnections between designers and the particular ways in which later architects learned from earlier ones, the chapters investigate an evolving, interdisciplinary design practice to show the relevance of historical understanding to design. Like a history, a design is a reinterpretation of the past that is meaningful to the present. Equally, a design is equivalent to a fiction, convincing users to suspend disbelief. We expect a history or a novel to be written in words, but they can also be delineated in drawing, cast in concrete or seeded in soil. The architect is a ‘physical novelist’ as well as a ‘physical historian’. Like building sites, ruins are full of potential. In revealing not only what is lost, but also what is incomplete, a ruin suggests the future as well as the past. As a stimulus to the imagination, a ruin’s incomplete and broken forms expand architecture’s allegorical and metaphorical capacity, indicating that a building can remain unfinished, literally and in the imagination, focusing attention on the creativity of users as well as architects. Emphasising the symbiotic relations between nature and culture, a building designed, occupied and imagined as a ruin acknowledges the coproduction of multiple authors, whether human, non-human or atmospheric, and is an appropriate model for architecture in an era of increasing climate change.

This volume addresses the question of how the rapidly rising cost of living in prospering cities affects the everyday life and life plans of the middle class.
