This landmark book uncovers for the first time in detail one of the greatest horrors of the twentieth century: the vast system of Soviet camps that were responsible for the deaths of countless millions. Gulag is the only major history in any language to draw together the mass of memoirs and writings on the Soviet camps that have been published in Russia and the West. Using these, as well as her own original research in NKVD archives and interviews with survivors, Anne Applebaum has written a fully documented history of the camp system: from its origins under the tsars, to its colossal expansion under Stalin's reign of terror, its zenith in the late 1940s and eventual collapse in the era of glasnost. It is a gigantic feat of investigation, synthesis and moral reckoning.

Gulag written by Tomasz Kizny and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with categories.

Throughout the Stalin era and after, the Gulag system of forced labor blighted the Soviet Union. Millions were incarcerated in its camps, some to be eventually released, many to die imprisoned and faceless. For decades, histories of the camp system have relied on the experiences of those who suffered within them for their main source of information. Though these accounts have been supplemented with officially sanctioned Soviet publications, the details of the forced labor system have for decades remained hidden by state secrecy. But with the collapse of the Soviet empire, the archives of the Gulag are now opening. Drawing on the archival records kept by Gulag authorities themselves, "The Gulag at War" traces the development of this system in the Soviet Union from 1920 through 1960. The volume describes the state's perceptions of the camps and their tasks and addresses long-held questions concerning the motives behind the system. Specific attention is given to the World War II years; the information found in the archives shows the importance of forced labor to Soviet, and therefore Allied, victory. "The Gulag at War" offers a close investigation of different aspects of camp life during this time, supplying data concerning the numbers and backgrounds of the prisoners, the economic tasks and achievements, the camp conditions, and the effectiveness of camp security which have previously been unavailable.

Seminar paper from the year 2024 in the subject History of Germany - National Socialism, World War II, grade: 1,0, Sofia University St. Klimment Ohridski (Faculty of History), course: History of Russia during the 20th century, language: English, abstract: The paper deals with the concentration camps in Germany during the National Socialist era and the Gulag concentration camps in the Soviet Union. The aim of the work is to compare the camps and to identify similarities and differences. The first step is to place them in their historical context. Therefore, it will be explained how and under what circumstances the concentration camps in the Third Reich and in the Soviet Union came into being. The ideological basis for the concentration camps in the respective political systems will then be elaborated. The structures and organization of the two types of camp will then be examined. This will be followed by an analysis of which groups or ethnic groups of people were prisoners in the camps. Afterwards, the living conditions and the use of violence in the concentration camps will be discussed. Finally, a conclusion will be drawn from the findings, highlighting the similarities and differences between the two types of camp. In order to make a well-founded comparison of the National Socialist concentration camps and the Gulag concentration camps, it is necessary to look at the genesis of the two types of camp in the context of their time. The National Socialist concentration camps were established and operated during the rule of the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945. The first early concentration camps were set up shortly after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. Even before he came to power Hitler had already indicated the establishment of camps on several occasions. Overall, the development of the camps can be divided into four phases. During the first phase from 1933-1935 hundreds of small camps were established, but also bigger camps like Dachau. The camps of this period had the primary function of breaking the resistance of political opponents. During the second phase from 1936-1938, further groups of prisoners were interned in the concentration camps and the number of camps increased.

The Gulag Survivor written by Nanci Adler and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-04 with History categories.

Even before its dissolution in 1991, the Soviet Union was engaged in an ambivalent struggle to come to terms with its violent and repressive history. Following the death of Stalin in 1953, entrenched officials attempted to distance themselves from the late dictator without questioning the underlying legitimacy of the Soviet system. At the same time, the Gulag victims to society opened questions about the nature, reality, and mentality of the system that remain contentious to this day.The Gulag Survivor is the first book to examine at length and in-depth the post-camp experience of Stalin's victims and their fate in post-Soviet Russia. As such, it is an essential companion to the classic work of Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Based on extensive interviews, memoirs, official records, and recently opened archives, The Gulag Survivor describes what survivors experienced when they returned to society, how officials helped or hindered them, and how issues surrounding the existence of the returnees evolved from the fifties up to the present.Adler establishes the social and historical context of the first wave of returnees who were ""liberated"" into exile in Stalin's time. She reviews diverse aspects of return including camp culture, family reunion, and the psychological consequences of the Gulag. Adler then focuses on the enduring belief in the Communist Party among some survivors and the association between returnees and the growing dissident movement. She concludes by examining how issues surrounding the survivors reemerged in the eighties and nineties and the impact they had on the failing Soviet system. Written and researched while Russian archives were most available and while there were still survivors to tell their stories, The Gulag Survivor is a groundbreaking and essential work in modern Russian history. It will be read by historians, political scientists, Slavic scholars, and sociologists.

Cannibal Island written by Nicolas Werth and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-12 with History categories.

A searing historical account of a tragic episode of the Stalinist terror During the spring of 1933, Stalin’s police rounded up nearly one hundred thousand people as part of the Soviet regime’s “cleansing” of Moscow and Leningrad and deported them to Siberia. Many of the victims were sent to labor camps, but ten thousand of them were dumped in a remote wasteland and left to fend for themselves. Cannibal Island reveals the shocking, grisly truth about their fate. These people were abandoned on the island of Nazino without food or shelter. Left there to starve and to die, they eventually began to eat each other. Nicolas Werth, a French historian of the Soviet era, reconstructs their gruesome final days using rare archival material from deep inside the Stalinist vaults. Werth skillfully weaves this episode into a broader story about the Soviet frenzy in the 1930s to purge society of all those deemed to be unfit. For Stalin, these undesirables included criminals, opponents of forced collectivization, vagabonds, gypsies, even entire groups in Soviet society such as the “kulaks” and their families. Werth sets his story within the broader social and political context of the period, giving us for the first time a full picture of how Stalin’s system of “special villages” worked, how hundreds of thousands of Soviet citizens were moved about the country in wholesale mass transportations, and how this savage bureaucratic machinery functioned on the local, regional, and state levels. Cannibal Island challenges us to confront unpleasant facts not only about Stalin’s punitive social controls and his failed Soviet utopia but about every generation’s capacity for brutality—including our own.
