English summary: Friedrich Wilhelm Graf's studies of Protestant theology at universities in the interwar years have repeatedly triggered controversies. Critical interpretations of the anti-liberal theologies of Karl Barth, Friedrich Gogarten and Hans-Joachim Iwand met with opposition, as did studies of the anti-democratic cult of authority of conservative Lutherans. For the history of theology in the Weimar Republic, Graf focuses on a consistent historiography and, inspired by the modern history of ideas and discourse, on the political contextualization of the theological production of knowledge. The anti-historical revolution in the early 1920s brought forward a radical anti-bourgeois gesture of the absolute. An emphasis on a very strong faith and a hunger for wholeness were united with a decisionist Zeitgeist which made it almost impossible to recognize the parliamentary democracy's need to compromise. Dieses Buch bietet eine reprasentative Auswahl aus den theologiehistorischen Studien Grafs zur Weimarer Republik und zu den Anfangen der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur. Am Beispiel des Kreises um Martin Rades Die Christliche Welt zeigt der Autor insbesondere die Resistenz einiger prominenter liberaler Protestanten im NS-Staat. Graf setzt fur die Theologiegeschichte der Weimarer Republik auf konsequente Historisierung und, inspiriert auch durch moderne Ideengeschichte und Diskursgeschichte, auf die politische Kontextualisierung theologischer Wissensproduktion. So deutet er insbesondere die von den damals Jungeren geubte Fundamentalkritik am burgerlichen theologischen Liberalismus des Kaiserreichs als eine Absage auch an den politischen Liberalismus im Umfeld Friedrich Naumanns. Die antihistoristische Revolution in den fruhen 1920er Jahren forderte einen radikal antiburgerlichen Gestus des Unbedingten. Glaubensernste Emphase und Hunger nach Ganzheit gingen vielfaltige Verbindungen mit einem dezisinistischen Zeitgeist ein, der es kaum erlaubte, die Konsensbildungsmechanismen und den Kompromissbedarf einer parlamentarischen Demokratie zu erkennen und ernst zu nehmen.

""Disenchantment" is a key term in the self-understanding of modernity. But what exactly do we mean when we use this concept? What was its original meaning when Max Weber introduced it? And can the conventional meaning or Max Weber's view really be defended, given the present state of knowledge about the history of religion? This book is an attempt to divest this concept of its enduring enchantment. The first chapters of the book deal with the three empirical disciplines history, psychology and sociology of religion to develop an understanding of religion that then lays the groundwork for what is presented in chapter 4, namely the most thorough study of Weber's views on disenchantment that has ever been undertaken. It turns out that Weber's use was highly ambiguous and that his grand narrative leading from the prophets of ancient Judaism to the crisis of meaning on the eve of the First World War collapses when we recognize this ambiguity. This makes it possible to construct an alternative that takes into account the dynamics of ever new sacralizations, their normative evaluation in the light of the values of a universalist morality and the dangers of the misuse of religion in connection with the formation of power.
