In der Diskussion um den sog. Antijudaismus des Neuen Testamentes kommt dem Matthäusevangelium eine besondere Bedeutung zu: Neben deutlichen Aussagen Ã"ber die Herkunft Jesu aus Israel und seine ausschlieÃli- che Sendung zu Israel stehen Aussagen, die als Indizien dafÃ"r gewertet werden können, dass aus des Sicht des Verfassers das Volk Israel verworfen ist. Es ist in der Matthäusforschung umstritten, ob und in welcher Weise es dieser vermeintlich widersprÃ"chliche Tatbestand erlaubt, eine einheitlichen Sicht, d.h. eine matthäische Israeltheologie zu formulieren. Die Arbeit "Der Hirte Israels" versucht in einer Gesamtsicht auf das Matthäusevangelium zu zeigen, dass Israel in jeder der drei Phasen der matthäischen Heilsgeschichte (Wirken des irdischen Jesus -Gegenwart als Reich des Menschensohnes - eschatologisches Heil nach dem Gericht Ã"ber alle Menschen) einen eigenen, nicht nur negativen Ort hat. Besondere Schwerpunkte bilden bei der Auslegung die Frage nach dem matthäischen Missionskonzept (Mt 10) und die Frage nach dem matthäischen Gerichtsverständnis im Blick auf das Volk Israel (Mt 24-25). Die schroff antijÃ"dischen Aussagen des Matthäus-evangeliums haben ihre Funktion in der Auseinandersetzung des Mt mit seinen jÃ"dischen Zeitgenossen und in der Deutung der Zerstörung Jerusalems als innergeschichtliches Gericht Ã"ber Israel. Zugleich fordert Mt seine Gemeinde zur fortgesetzten Mission auch innerhalb Israels auf. Jesus ist und bleibt der vom Propheten verheiÃene "Hirte Israels". Vor dem Hintergrund heutiger Fragestellungen wird dieser Befund kritisch gewÃ"rdigt.
