Als im Jahr 2000 das von dem amerikanischen Historiker Jan Tomasz Gross verfasste Buch ?Nachbarn? erschien, l”ste sein Inhalt eine breite Diskussion aus. Das Buch hat die Mitschuld Polens am nationalsozialistischen Judenmord w„hrend des Zweiten Weltkrieges zum Thema. Gross vertritt in seiner Publikation die Auffassung, dass das Massaker von Jedwabne am 10. Juli 1941, bei dem zwischen 300 und 400 Juden ermordet wurden, entgegen der gel„ufigen Meinung nicht von Deutschen, sondern von der lokalen polnischen Bev”lkerung initiiert wurde. Damit rckte er den Antisemitismus als ein moralisches Problem ins Bewusstsein der polnischen ™ffentlichkeit. Auch zw”lf Jahre sp„ter spaltet die Diskussion um die polnische Eigenverantwortung am nationalsozialistischen V”lkermord nach wie vor die Gesellschaft. Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist es, die Erfahrungen polnischer Juden w„hrend des Zweiten Weltkrieges darzustellen, die 55 Jahre nach Kriegsende zu einer derartig heftigen Debatte ber die Mitschuld der Polen am Holocaust fhrten.

Rebecca's Revival is the remarkable story of a Caribbean woman--a slave turned evangelist--who helped inspire the rise of black Christianity in the Atlantic world. All but unknown today, Rebecca Protten left an enduring influence on African-American religion and society. Born in 1718, Protten had a childhood conversion experience, gained her freedom from bondage, and joined a group of German proselytizers from the Moravian Church. She embarked on an itinerant mission, preaching to hundreds of the enslaved Africans of St. Thomas, a Danish sugar colony in the West Indies. Laboring in obscurity and weathering persecution from hostile planters, Protten and other black preachers created the earliest African Protestant congregation in the Americas. The study of modern racism has tended to treat anti-Semitism and anti-black racism as separate and unconnected phenomena. This innovative study argues that a full understanding of the origins and development of racism in Europe after 1870 needs to examine the structure and interrelationships between the two dominant forms of prejudice. Contrary to expectation. anti-black racism was not confined to the colonial maritime nations of western Europe, but pepetrated even the rural societies of central and eastern Europe. Likewise, anti-Semitism could flourish even in the almost total absence of Jews. MacMaster explores the conditions under which modern political movements, faced with the crisis of modernity, began to draw upon and mobilise the negative stereotypes that, through the development of the mass media, had become almost universal features of popular culture.
