He resided in London, in close association with Friedrich Engels, from 1885 to 1890, and studied daily at the British Museum. For more than thirty years Kautsky has served Inter national Socialism with high literary ability, great learn ing, and unusual aptitude for sociological research. Students of economics owe him a heavy debt for the laborious and difficult work of editing the literary remains of Karl Marx. In 1882, Kautsky, in partnership with another, founded the Neue Zeit, from the editorship of which he was deposed by the German Majority Socialists in May, 1918. His various books have been translated into many European languages, and have been an important factor in the education of the European working classes. Es denkt, fühlt, zielt zum Kleinbürgerlichen hin, wenigstens innerhalb seiner wirtschaftlich gesicherten Schichten, die durch Vorbildung und Bildungsmittel in der Lage sind, dem historischen Bildungsdrang des Bürgers nachzueifern. Die große Masse kennt eine gemeinsame Aufgabe, die "solidari tät hervorruft: den Kampf um die Erringung der sozialistischen Wirtnhaftsstruktur, mit dem reinen und klaren Endziel der klassenlosen Gesellschaftsform. Dem Selbstbewußtsein der Massen soll nun im Proletarischen Theater, eine Tat revolutionär ge sinnter_ Jugend, die aus bürgerlichen Kreisen stammt, die künst lerische Objektivierung seiner Strebungen und Kämpfe geboten werden. Klassenkampftheater. Es ist nicht zu leugnen, daß für ein Theater, welches sich auf der Annahme gründet, "als ob es einem Gemeinschaftswillen sein Dasein verdankt, Schöpfung aus Notwendigkeit, Symbol gemeinsamer Lebensauffassung ist, eine Richtung gegeben wäre, die nicht mehr nur Geste ist. Diese Bühne könnte nicht nur allein zur geistigen Klärung beitragen, die durch Einschränkung des Programmes auf alles die Zeit wirklich Bewegende erreicht wird, mehr noch, sie wäre mo ralische Anstalt der Massen, seitdem die Kirche (nicht die Reli gion) den Kredit verloren, da sie sich zum Instrument des Klassen staates mißbrauchen ließ. Praktisch liegt der Fall aber so, daß einerseits die bisher vom Abfall bürgerlicher Mißbildung ge nährte Masse des Proletariats zum Klassenkampf keines "the aters mehr bedarf, denn es wird durch die harte Wirklichkeit stets aufs neue angespornt und ist sich auch über die politischenund wirtschaftlichen Prinzipien der sogenannten Umordnung nicht unklar, während für die seelische Neugeburt, die Umwertung der Werte, für die metaphysische Verankerung des Schicksals des Einzelnen im Welt und Menschheitsgeschehen die Literatur, die als zeitgenössische revolutionäre Dramatik vorgesetzt wird, durch ihre beliebte schematische schwarz-weiß -technik nicht geeignet ist. Die wahrhafte Erlösung der Welt wird erst dann vollzogen sein, wenn sie in iedem Einzelnen Ereignis geworden ist. Auch der Proletarier ist zuerst Mensch und dann erst Prole tariet. Die Idee der neuen Menschheitsgemeinschaft ist da, sie wird eben vorausgesetzt als bestehend und wirkend. Ihr Inhalt ist weiter und tiefer als die bekannte Klassenkampfdrama tik, deren Wirksamkeit oft geringer als die eines politischen Leitartikels oder die Rede eines Versammlungsleiters ist. Auf dervoraussetzung einer Gemeinschaft des Proletariats mit der revolutionierten Intelligenz und unter deren Führmg läßt sich aber ein neues Volkstheater gründen, das diesen Namen wirklich verdient.
