Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Für die Kurpfälzer sind die Züge der Oberrheinischen Eisenbahngesellschaft, allerorts nur OEG genannt, nicht mehr aus dem Bild ihrer Landschaft hinwegzudenken. Aber auch diese feste Institution hat eine Entstehungsgeschichte, sogar eine sehr wechselhafte und mitunter stürmische. Sie begann 1887 noch unter dem Namen Süddeutsche Eisenbahngesellschaft (SEG). Die Industrialisierung der Stadt Mannheim ließ es vor über hundert Jahren dringend notwendig erscheinen, die vielen Landgemeinden an dieses Zentrum anzubinden. Wo bisher noch Ochsenkarren und Schuhsohlen ihren Dienst versahen, bot die Eisenbahn ein viel moderneres und nicht zuletzt bequemeres Transportmittel. Aber die politische Teilung des Rhein-Neckar-Gebietes und die unterschiedlichen wirtschaftlichen Interessen ihrer Bewohner sorgten von Anfang an für Konflikte. Trotzdem entstand in erstaunlich kurzer Zeit, Zug um Zug, das bekannte Gleisdreieck Mannheim-Weinheim-Heidelberg. Über den wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Nutzen entstand bald ein heftiger Streit zwischen privaten Bahnbetreibern und der Stadt Mannheim. Im langen Verlauf dieses Konfliktes gelang es der Stadt weitgehend, die entscheidende Kontrolle über die SEG, später OEG, zu gewinnen. Dennoch blieb die Gesellschaft über alle Jahrzehnte hinweg wirtschaftlich unabhängig; nicht zuletzt aufgrund ihrer außergewöhnlich geringen finanziellen Defizite. Obwohl wesentliche Dokumente in den Bombennächten des Zweiten Weltkrieges verloren gingen, ließen sich noch viele Details rekonstruieren. Und unübersehbar treten in den Geschehnissen von vor hundert Jahren erstaunliche Paralellen zur heutigen Verkehrspolitik auf. In the first study of the global dimensions of musical modernism, Björn Heile proposes a novel theory according to which musical modernism is constituted by a global diasporic network of composers, musicians and institutions. In a series of historical and analytical case studies from different parts of the world, this book overcomes the respective limitations of both Eurocentric and postcolonial, revisionist accounts, focusing instead on the transnational entanglements between the West and other world regions. As essential components of globalization, the study of practices and processes of space formation promotes a nuanced understanding of globalization. How do people create spaces for social action under the global condition, especially since the nineteenth century, when global interconnectedness increased rapidly? We explore the problem through specific case studies. Anthropologists, historians, geographers, sociologists, global studies scholars, and cultural studies scholars examine the agency of, e.g., members and staff of African regional organizations, Indian migrant workers, female GDR activists, Soviet planning experts, or US novelists. By studying elites as well as middle-class and micro-entrepreneurs – i.e. more and less influential actors – we encourage reflection on the relationship between power and space and examine how spatial entrepreneurs attempt to influence the shaping of space and their spatial literacy. The analysis aims at a better understanding of the different globalization projects, their crisis-like clashes, and the resulting conflictual development of spatial orders.

The Enlightenment was based on the use of reason, common sense, and "natural law," and was paralleled by an emphasis on feelings and the emotions in religious, especially Pietist circles. Progressive thinkers in England, France, and later in Germany began to assail the absolutism of the state and the orthodoxy of the Church; in Germany the line led from Leibniz, Thomasius, and Wolff to Lessing and Kant, and eventually to the rise of an educated upper middle class. Literary developments encompassed the emergence of a national theater, literature, and a common literary language. This became possible in part because of advances in literacy and education, especially among bourgeois women, and the reorganization of book production and the book market. This major new reference work provides a fresh look at the major literary figures, works, and cultural developments from around 1700 up to the late Enlightenment. They trace the 18th-century literary revival in German-speaking countries: from occasional and learned literature under the influence of French Neoclassicism to the establishment of a new German drama, religious epic and secular poetry, and the sentimentalist novel of self-fashioning.
