Das Thema „Religion in der Reformpädagogik“ findet in der Literatur nur wenig Beachtung. In Bezug auf die Fülle von Werken zur Reformpädagogik ist dies verwunderlich, denn es existieren durchaus pädagogische Konzeptionen verschiedener Reformpädagogen, welche religiöse Dimensionen aufweisen und verschiedene Impulse der Auseinandersetzung mit Religion, Religiosität und damit verbundener Erziehung beinhalten. Nicht nur reformpädagogische Konzepte, sondern auch die Reformpädagogen selbst waren oftmals aktiv an Debatten um Religion und Religiosität beteiligt, vor allem in der Zeit vor dem ersten Weltkrieg. Schon Ellen Key beschäftigt sich in ihrem Werk "Das Jahrhundert des Kindes" (1900) mit der Frage nach dem schulischen Religionsunterricht. Ihr Denken war sowohl vom Christentum, als auch von Religion und Religiosität geprägt. Diese Arbeit wird sich mit der Pädagogik Maria Montessoris und Peter Petersens beschäftigen. Die Lebenswerke dieser beiden Reformpädagogen zeichnen sich durch eine hohe internationale Resonanz aus. Beiden Konzeptionen wird nachgesagt, dass sie ohne Berücksichtigung des religiösen Hintergrundes nicht verstanden werden könnten. Hier stellt sich die Frage, welche Rolle Religion im Denken von Maria Montessori und Peter Petersen sowie in deren pädagogischen Konzeptionen spielt. Ebenfalls gilt es herauszuarbeiten, welche Vorstellungen die beiden Reformpädagogen in Bezug auf die Praxis religiöser Erziehung hatten. In der Literatur existieren durchaus Vergleiche der Pädagogik Maria Montessoris und Peter Petersens. Diese befassen sich jedoch nicht mit dem Themenkomplex „Religion und Religiosität“, sondern arbeiten allgemeine Aspekte heraus. Diese Arbeit jedoch widmet sich in besonderem Maße dem religiösen Aspekt.
