Die Studie gibt einen Überblick über die kommunikativen Verhältnisse im pädagogischen Diskurs der Spätaufklärung sowie im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts. Über eine Kompletterhebung der einschlägigen zeitgenössischen Journalistik und der entsprechenden lexikalischen Gattungsformate werden jene Publikationsmilieus bestimmt, die in dieser Epoche zur Ausdifferenzierung pädagogischer Wissensbestände beitrugen. Dabei zeigt sich nicht nur, dass der Markt an periodischen und lexikalischen Angeboten überraschend breit war, vielmehr wird offensichtlich, dass die Diskussion um die sozialen Sachverhalte Erziehung und Bildung von ganz anderen Interessengruppen und kommunikativen Gemeinschaften getragen wurde, als die erziehungswissenschaftliche Historiografie bislang annahm. Insbesondere der Befund, dass sich die quantitative Expansion der Erziehungspublizistik über verstärkte thematische Profilierungen in Hinblick auf die Bedürfnisse einer Laien- sowie einer Volksschullehrerklientel realisierte, gibt dabei zu der Vermutung Anlass, dass die traditionelle Disziplingeschichtsschreibung die Bedeutung der Philologen, Philanthropen, Katecheten, Erziehungsphilosophen oder der Anthropologen für die Etablierung der pädagogischen Fachdiskussion der Sattelzeit bisher überschätzte. Der Autor schlägt demgegenüber ein anderes Szenario der Ausdifferenzierung, Institutionalisierung und Professionalisierung der pädagogischen Wissenskultur vor.
