Am ausführlichsten werden Platon, Cicero, Augustinus, Hume und Diderot diskutiert, doch reicht die Reihe der behandelten Autoren von der Antike über Mittelalter und Renaissance, das Zeitalter der Aufklärung und das neunzehnte Jahrhundert bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart (Iris Murdoch, Paul Feyerabend). Irony and Idealism investigates the historical and conceptual structure of the development of a philosophically distinctive conception of irony in early- to mid-nineteenth century European philosophy. The principal figures treated are the romantic thinkers Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis, Hegel, and Kierkegaard. Fred Rush argues that the development of philosophical irony in this historical period is best understood as providing a way forward in philosophy in the wake of Kant and Jacobi that is discrete from, and many times opposed to, German idealism. Irony and Idealism argues, against the grain of received opinion, that among the German romantics Schlegel's conception of irony is superior to similar ideas found in Novalis. It also presents a sustained argument showing that historical reconsideration of Schlegel has been hampered by contestable Hegelian assumptions concerning the conceptual viability of romantic irony and by the misinterpretation of what the romantics mean by 'the absolute.' Rush argues that this is primarily a social-ontological term and not, as is often supposed, a metaphysical concept. Kierkegaard, although critical of the romantic conception, deploys his own adaptation of it in his criticism of Hegel, continuing, and in a way completing, the arc of irony through nineteenth-century philosophy. The book concludes by offering suggestions meant to guide contemporary reconsideration of Schlegel's and Kierkegaard's views on the philosophical significance of irony.

In den letzten Jahrzehnten des 18. Jahrhunderts ist eine auffallende Konjunktur von Dialogromanen zu konstatieren, d.h. von Romanen, in denen wie in für die Aufführung gedachten Theaterstücken Sprecherrollen, Regieanweisungen und Dialogwechsel typographisch gekennzeichnet werden. Von diesem Textkorpus aus richtet sich die Fragestellung auf Genese und Funktion des Dialogs in Prosatexten im allgemeinen. Im Mittelpunkt steht deutsche und französische Dialogprosa der Zeit zwischen 1770 und 1800; ergänzt um die Vorgeschichte seit der Frühaufklärung und einen Ausblick auf das beginnende 19. Jahrhundert, um Entwicklungslinien deutlich zu machen. Während jedoch im verwandten und als vergleichbare Gattung heranziehbaren Briefroman der Brief dem Medium Schrift verpflichtet bleibt, markiert der Dialog die Schnittstelle zwischen Schriftlichkeit und Mündlichkeit. Es scheint daher sinnvoll, die dialogische Literatur nicht unter Gattungsgesichtspunkten zu untersuchen, sondern vor dem Hintergrund sich wandelnder Kommunikationsverhältnisse, im Zusammenhang der Geschichte von Schrift, Druck, Alphabetisierung und Lektüre. Anhand der poetologischen Diskussion um das zentrale Stichwort der 'Vergegenwärtigung' wird zunächst die theoretische Programmatik des Dialogs als 'fingierter Mündlichkeit' vorgestellt und in einem weiteren Kapitel deren Relevanz für die zeitgenössische Pädagogik erläutert, bevor in Einzelanalysen der Dialogromane von Wezel und populären Schriftstellern der Spätaufklärung, von Klinger, Wieland, de Sade, Diderot und Rousseau der je spezifische Einsatz der literarischen Technik Dialog konturiert wird.
