Für die Orang Rimba auf Sumatra ist der Regenwald eine Welt, die nicht nur von Tieren, sondern auch von Göttern und Geistern bevölkert ist und ihre eigenen Gesetze besitzt. Er bildet die Lebenswelt der Orang Rimba, die durch Abholzung und Plantagenwirtschaft bedroht ist. Das Buch basiert auf einer 15 monatigen ethnologischen Feldforschung (zwischen 2003 und 2005) der Autorin bei diesen Waldbewohnern. Sie untersucht, wie durch Interaktionen mit verschiedenen Akteuren, vor allem dem indonesischen Staat und Nicht-Regierungsorganisationen - sie alle haben Interesse am Wald als wirtschaftliche Ressource oder Schutzgebiet -, verschiedene Identitäten der Orang Rimba hervorgebracht werden. Die Arbeit setzt sich detailliert mit der Selbstdarstellung der Orang Rimba auseinander und vergleicht sie mit verschiedenen Fremdperspektiven externer Akteure auf diese nicht sesshafte Gruppe. Diskurse über Wald als gefährliche Wildnis oder Schutzgebiet bestimmen auch die Zukunft und die Handlungsfähigkeit der Orang Rimba, sei es als marginalisierte Minderheit oder selbstbestimmte Regenwaldbewohner.

With 'Biogeography and Ecology in South America' as the general theme, a total of twenty-nine contributions by thirty authors is offered here in two volumes, being volumes 18 and 19 of the Monographiae Biologicae. Most of these discussions deal with decidedly specialist themes and the editors have been particularly concerned to ensure that the authors enjoyed the greatest possible freedom in the preparation of their work in order that different points of view and interpretations, together with some questions of controversy, may be clarified. This also applies, of course, to the several chapters in which general themes (geographical substance, climate, geology, vegetation, amongst others) are discussed. Since the amount of material available is too great to enable one to aspire to a presentation of the complete biogeographical and ecological picture, this procedure seems expedient. However, these two volumes could well be regarded as being a preparatory work for just such a complete description. Each of the separate technical contributions refers to the continent as a whole, in order to characterise it as such from the viewpoint of the specialist. For this reason it was necessary to forgo special discussions of particular regions or types of landscape, although South America of all places is remarkably rich in unique regional phenom- ena, the altiplano of Peru and Bolivia, the relict forests of Fray Jorge, the shrub formations of Tierra del Fuego, the lakes of the High Andes, for example.

Although Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a popular teaching method, research on CLIL has nearly exclusively focused on aspects of language learning. Besides that, we are still lacking any cognitively well-grounded theory about the special features of contexts in which the focus is on content learning, but in which a foreign language is used as the medium of communicating information. This book re-examines the basis for CLIL from a cognitive perspective and investigates how the use of a foreign language as a working language influences the processing of content. It summarizes findings from cognitive psychology on thinking, problem solving and conceptual processing, and integrates them with models of language-specific mental activities such as speech processing and text composition. This provides a theoretically well-grounded basis for the understanding of the special features of CLIL, and promotes a Cognitive Linguistic perspective on CLIL pedagogy. The theoretical considerations form the basis for an empirical study that offers the first insights into what CLIL learners actually do when they solve content-focused tasks while using an L2. Through spontaneous verbalization of thought, detailed verbal protocols were elicited and analysed into language and content focused cognitive processes. The analysis shows that both language and conceptual thought interact closely and that a focus on language in general has positive effects on the processing of semantic content; the use of an L2 as working language can enhance this effect. Additionally, the study offers a thorough reflection and new perspectives on verbal protocols as research tools, in particular in L2 contexts.
