**** The Paris Salon was the largest and most important contemporary art exhibition in 19th-century Europe. It was a stage for artistic self-promotion and a place of competition, an art fair, popular attraction, cultural flagship and state propaganda instrument rolled into one; it brought together artists, critics, collectors and dealers, was a stimulus for aesthetic debates and brought an intellectual and socially heterogeneous public under its spell. The Salons of the Consulate and First Empire (1799-1814) were used by Napoleon and his advisers as a stage and tool for political propaganda. Artists had to adapt to this far-reaching change to the exhibition. At the same time they had to react to new artistic trends in order to maintain their place in the Paris art scene. The success and scope of the Salons in these years are demonstrated not only by the rising numbers of exhibitors and visitors. The many forms of their reception – in newspapers and magazines, letters, travel diaries and volumes of reproductions – are also evidence of the exhibition’s wide appeal, which reached beyond the borders of France. Based on a wide range of largely unpublished sources, Eva Knels examines the organisation of the exhibition, the participating artists, and the international reaction to the Salon, with reference to the complex changes in the art world in the early 19th century. The author’s perspective includes the changing interrelationships between artistic policies, artistic production and the reception of art.

Over the last decade, musicological interest in both the composing virtuoso of the nineteenth century and the phenomenon of virtuosity has increased. Moving beyond approaches to music solely in terms of works allowed for a range of perspectives on concepts of virtuosity to emerge. Such cultural theory-based approaches crucially put the traditional musicological image of the virtuoso into a broader context. Recent advances in performance studies, furthermore, emphasise the need to include factors such as staging, the audience, sound and space, and musical practices, in our understanding of the complex phenomenon of virtuosity. The present volume tries to meet the challenges raised by these multi-layered perspectives by varying the foci on virtuosity – from specific attention to individual virtuosi and considerations of virtuosity’s historical and social context to broader questions regarding innovations in the current landscape and future virtuoso phenomena. The broad range of topics centres on the composer and virtuoso Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst and his immediate sphere of influence. The contributions in the present volume not only reveal the complexity of the research field of virtuosity but also liberate Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst from the shadow of fixed, mainly non-musical, discourses on virtuosity around Paganini. The enclosed CD with recordings by Guillaume Tardif, Philippe Borer, Clive Brown and Friederike Spangenberg enriches these texts by including the dimension of sound.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the shifting of American foreign policy away from "old" Europe, long-established patterns of interaction between Germany and the U.S. have come under review. Although seemingly disconnected from the cultural and intellectual world, political developments were not without their influence on the humanities and their curricula during the past century. In retrospect, we can speak of the many different roles Germany has played in American eyes. The Many Faces of Germany seeks to acknowledge the importance of those incarnations for the study of German culture and history on both sides of the Atlantic. One of the major questions raised by the contributors is whether the transformations in the transatlantic dynamics and in the importance of Germany for the U.S. have had a major influence on the study of things German in the U.S. internally. The volume gathers together leading voices of the older and younger generations of social historians, literary scholars, film critics, and cultural historians.

During the quarter century between 1780 and 1806, Berlin's courtly and intellectual elites gathered in the homes of a few wealthy, cultivated Jewish women to discuss the events of the day. Princes, nobles, upwardly mobile writers, actors, and beautiful Jewish women flocked to the salons of Rahel Varnhagen, Henriette Herz, and Dorothea von Courland, creating both a new cultural institution and an example of social mixing unprecedented in the German past.
