Seeing Hitler's Germany is the first fully researched, wide-ranging study of commercial tourism under the swastika. The book demonstrates how effectively the Nazi regime coordinated all German tourism organizations. At the same time, it emphasizes the apparent 'normality' of many everyday tourist experiences after 1933. One of the main objectives of nature conservation in Europe is to protect valuable cultural landscapes characterized by a mixture of open habitats and hedges, trees and patchy woodland (semi-open landscapes).The development of these landscapes during the past decades has been characterized by an ongoing intensification of land use on the one hand, and an increasing number of former meadows and pastures becoming fallow as a result of changing economic conditions on the other hand. Since species adapted to open and semi-open landscapes contribute to biodiversity in Europe in a major way, this development is of great concern to nature conservation. In several countries largescale, nature-adapted pastoral systems have been recognized as one solution to this problem. These systems could offer an alternative to industrial livestock raising and keep a high biodiversity on the landscape level. Against the background of livestock diseases such as BSE and Foot and Mouth Disease and the efforts to reform the Common Agricultural Policy in the EU by changing the criteria for agricultural subsidies, these concepts gain particular significance.They could also represent an alternative to the established, costly habitat management tools.

In October 1986 the German Minister for Research and Technology (Bundesminister fUr Forschung und Technologie), Dr. H. Riesenhuber, officially announced that the super-deep borehole of the Continental Deep Drilling Program of the Federal Republic of Germany (KTB) would be drilled in the Oberpfalz area of Northern Bavaria. The site selection was based on a recommendation from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) made after an evaluation by the Project Management of the technical and financial risks involved. This decision was preceded by a conference held from September 19 to 21, 1986 in Seeheim/Odenwald at which the results of the site studies in the Oberpfalz and the Schwarzwald were presented and thoroughly debated. The models and scientific targets resulting from these investigations formed the basis for a vote by the DFG Senate Commission for Geoscientific Interdisciplinary Research which was taken immediately after the conference. After evaluation of all scientific and technical aspects, the members of the commission voted almost unanimously for the Oberpfalz site. It was, ho",'ever, strongly emphasized that both locations had a wealth of attractive research objectives and that despite clear-cut differences in some major aspects scientifically the two could be regarded as more or less equivalent. Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem Perfekt im Deutschen und Englischen und dessen Verhältnis zu zwei Klassen von Adverbien. Die Klasse der durativen Adverbien ist seit Dowtys (1979) Word meaning and Montague grammar immer im Zusammenhang mit dem Perfekt diskutiert worden, weil diese Adverbien nur dann mehrdeutig zwischen einer universellen und einer existentiellen Lesart zu sein schienen. Datenrecherchen zeigen aber, dass diese Mehrdeutigkeiten bei allen Tempora vorkommen. Dies führt zu einer neuen Analyse der Durativadverbien, bei der die Quantifizierung über Teilintervalle von der Bedeutung des Durativs abgespalten und die Mehrdeutigkeiten als Skopusambiguitäten gedeutet werden. Die Theorie erzeugt auch Lesarten, die für manche Sprecher nicht akzeptabel sind; diese werden durch eine optimalitätstheoretische Komponente herausgefiltert. Die zweite in der Studie behandelte Klasse von Adverbien sind die Extended-Now-Adverbien wie schon immer. Diese wurden bisher nicht im Zusammenhang mit dem Perfekt diskutiert; hier wird anhand von Korpusdaten argumentiert, dass diese Adverbien eine Behandlung des deutschen und englischen Perfekts als Extended-Now erzwingen. Anterioritätstheorien in der Nachfolge von Reichenbach (1947) sind nicht haltbar. Das durch datenbasierte Untersuchungen motivierte Temporalsystem ist einfacher und kompositionaler als bestehende Ansätze.
