Über viele Epochen hinweg, ließen Dichter ihre Hauptcharaktere Hand an sich legen und provozierten somit die unterschiedlichsten Reaktionen. Während Selbstmord bei den Römern noch als ehrenhafter Tod galt, wurde solches Handeln schon im Mittelalter als Todsünde verschrien. Und vor allem die Kirche übte starke Kritik am Suizid aus. Dies bekamen auch die Dichter zu spüren: Zwar fanden sie immer wieder ein Publikum, dass sich mit ihren lebensmüden Figuren identifizieren konnte, jedoch hatten sie auch mit Rügen bis hin zur Indizierung zu rechnen. Auf die Wirkungsgeschichte der literarischen Selbstmorde und ihre Konsequenzen für den Autor, bis hin zur neuen Bedeutung dieser Thematik in den heutigen Medien soll nun in dieser Seminararbeit eingegangen werden.
