This book describes the fortunes and activities of one of the few specialist publishing houses still in the hands of the same family that established it over years ago, and with it gives a p- trayal of those members who directed it. In doing so it covers a period of momentous historical events that directly and in- rectly shaped the firm's actions and achievements. But this volume tells not only, in word and picture, the story of Springer- Verlag but also, interwoven with it, the story of scientific p- lishing in Germany over the span of a hundred years. The text, densely packed with carefully researched facts and figures, is illuminated and supplemented by many illustrations whose captions, together with the author's notes, contain a wealth of important and interesting information. The reader is urged to read these captions as well as the notes so as to - preciate in full the events and people described. I have added a few footnotes to clarify or expand on some matters that may be unfamiliar to non-German readers. Because of the long period of time covered in these pages many of the documents and letters shown and commented upon are different in diction and style from those of today. An - tempt was made in the translation to keep the flavour of the original language and not contemporise it.

Ein Katalog der sämtlichen Veröffentlichungen eines Verlags ist die Leistungsbilanz seiner Arbeit und damit auch ein Ausdruck des Dankes gegenüber dem Gründer und den Verlegergene rationen die ihm nachfolgten. Er ist zugleich die objektivste Dokumentation der Geschichte des Verlags, indem er die Pro duktion seit dem Gründungsjahr nach Einzeltiteln registriert. Der Vorschlag, die Veröffentlichungen des Springer-Verlags seit seiner Gründung möglichst vollständig in einem Katalog nachzuweisen, geht auf das Jahr 1978 zurück. Zunächst stieß der Gedanke auf Skepsis, denn Julius Springer hatte in den ersten Jahren seiner Tätigkeit zahlreiche Broschüren veröffentlicht, die nur für den Tag bestimmt waren. Viele von ihnen fehlen schon in den ältesten der erhaltenen Verlagskataloge aus den 1880er Jahren. Manche wurden nicht einmal in den Leipziger Meßkatalogen angezeigt. In Einzelfällen mag dies auch poli tische Vorsicht geboten haben. Erste Recherchen ergaben dann, daß auch für die Zeit des Vormärz eine weitgehende Vollständigkeit zu erreichen war. Julius Springer hatte sich nämlich keineswegs gescheut, seine politischen Schriften im Börsenblatt anzuzeigen. Bei weiteren Nachforschungen konnten dann auch die meisten dieser Schrif ten in Bibliographien der Zeit ermittelt und gelegentlich auch über den Leihverkehr beschafft werden.

Thus, I decided to proceed from personal experience, to describe what has happened and to provide details gleaned from the correspondence. I have - counted here by no means only my own, but rather the personal experiences of the many company members and employees who are mentioned below. With the founding of the New York firm, developments branch out, becoming parallel but separate, and the change from one scene to another repeatedly interrupts the continuing course of events and the chronological flow of the report. In this connection, the occasional repetition of certain facts was - avoidable. In some places, however, it seemed more appropriate not to interrupt particular lines of development, but to describe them in continuity without regard to specific periods of time.

Register der Herausgeber und der wissenschaftlichen Vereinigungen, die an der Herausgabe beteiligt waren bzw. sind, beschließen den Band. Der Katalog ergänzt das 1992 anläßlich des 150. Jahrestags der Verlagsgründung erschienene Werk "Der Springer-Verlag. Katalog seiner Veröffentlichungen 1842 - 1945", in dem neben den Büchern auch die bis 1945 erschienen Zeitschriften nachgewiesen sind. Die gesonderte Herausgabe eines Katalogs sämtlicher bis 1992 erschienener Zeitschriften ist in deren zentraler Bedeutung für den Verlag begründet, dessen Rückgrat sie seit über hundert Jahren ideell und materiell darstellen. Sämtliche Bücher und Zeitschriften können auch auf einer CD-ROM recherchiert werden. Wer dieses Medium kennt, weiß, daß der Zugriff einfach und rasch ist sowie viele Verknüpfungsmöglichkeiten zuläßt. Neben den aktuell lieferbaren Titeln enthält die CD-ROM auch alle inzwischen vergriffenen Veröffentlichungen seit dem Jahr der Verlagsgründung. Im ersten Teilband dieser Verlagsgeschichte wird die Entwicklung des Springer-Verlags von seiner GrA1/4ndung bis zum Jahr 1945 nachgezeichnet. Julius Springer grA1/4ndete am 10. Mai 1842 in Berlin eine Buchhandlung und nahm gleichzeitig auch seine verlegerische TAtigkeit mit der VerAffentlichung politischer Tagesschriften auf. Nach der Revolution von 1848, an der er aktiv beteiligt war, erweiterte er sein Programm um Jugend- und SchulbA1/4cher, wandte sich der Forstwissenschaft und der Pharmazie zu, verlegte einige bedeutende Autoren der deutschen Literatur wie Gotthelf und Fontane und pflegte von Anbeginn auch die Rechts- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Seine SAhne bauten einen Technik- und Medizinverlag auf und nahmen bald auch die exakten Naturwissenschaften in ihr Programm auf. Die Enkel schlieAlich, insbesondere Ferdinand Springer d.J., entwickelten das Unternehmen zum bedeutendsten deutschen Wissenschaftsverlag. Der Verfasser schildert diese Entwicklung A1/4berwiegend anhand von Verlagsarchivalien, die in groAem Umfang A1/4berliefert sind, und verbindet seine Darstellung mit Ausblicken auf die jeweilige Situation des Buchhandels in dieser Zeit. Durch die Beigabe von etwa 400 Abbildungen, Tabellen und Aoebersichten ist ein umfassend dokumentiertes Werk der Buchhandels- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte entstanden.

Axel Springer verstand es schon früh, in seinen Publikationen angelsächsische und deutsche Elemente des Journalismus sowie der jeweiligen Wertesysteme zu verknüpfen und publikumswirksam zu verbreiten. Damit entsprach er den Vorgaben der westlichen Alliierten bei der Umgestaltung des deutschen Pressewesens nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Er traf aber auch den politischen und gesellschaftlichen Konsens der frühen Bundesrepublik, denn seine Zeitungen und Zeitschriften bestärkten gleichzeitig das Bedürfnis vieler Deutscher nach Ruhe, Ordnung und wirtschaftlichem Aufschwung. Mit diesem Spagat unterstützten die Publikationen des Verlages in den fünfziger Jahren die politisch-ideelle Westorientierung der Bundesdeutschen. Den Wertewandel in der Gesellschaft der sechziger Jahre vollzogen sie jedoch nicht mehr mit, so daß sie insbesondere für viele junge Deutsche zum Inbegriff der Beharrung wurden.
