Hat sich das kritische Gemut namlich des eigenen Ingrimms und XViderstandes entladen. so betrachtet es bekanntlich schon aus Reaktion die positiven seiten des Objekts mit neuer Liebe. Diese waren es ja doch von Anfang an, die sein lebendiges Interesse erregt hatten. Kommt nun dazu noch das von allen Seiten tonende Geschrei vielfaltiger Verwerfung (das im Grunde nicht viel anderes besagt. als was man selbst bescheidentlich auch schon an jenem Buche bemerkt hatte), so erwachst unwillkurlich das Bedurfnis, auch die starken des inkriminierteii FVerkes und ware es auch nur in der Minoritat von zweien zu verteidigen, da mit verschwindenden Ausnahmen die gewaltige Mehrheit von Kritikern aus allen Lagern, wissenschaftlichen, schriftstellerischen und politischen, geschlossen in der wohlgerusteten Phalanx des Sammelhefts, gepanzert in der dickleibigen Gegenschrift oder ausschwarmend in Einzelbroschurem Zeitschrift und Zeitungsaufsatzen und Vortragen, in tausendfacher Uliermaclit gegen den einzelnen Sturm lauft. Gleich einem Klotz ragt dieses einsame Buch aus der Springflut, (lie es nun vier Jahre lang umbrandet, imponierend schon durch den schweigenden Gegensatz. Dies moge den Anreiz erklaren, die Gesamtheit der Kisitikeii ihrerseits zu wurdigen. Nichts ist dabei weniger beabsichtigt als Antikritik, die niemand uberzeugt und niemandem genug tut. XVeder im Sinne einer VViderlegung aller Irrtumer der bisherigen Kritiken von uberlegener Sachkenntnis aus, was die Umfassungskraft des einzelnen bei weitem ubersteigen wurde, noch im Sinne einer gegen seitigen selbstaufhebung der gegensatzlichen Behauptungen, wie es wohl manchmal moglich xvare, doch sachlich nichts-sagend bliebe, und am allerwenigsten endlich im Sinne einer Spenglersclieti 0 rthodoxie, die alle Angriffe auf sein WVerk zu entkraiften hatte. Modern European literature has traditionally been seen as a series of attempts to assert successive styles of writing as 'new'. No longer content with accepting whiteness as the norm, critical scholars have turned their attention to whiteness itself. In Critical White Studies: Looking Behind the Mirror, numerous thinkers, including Toni Morrison, Eric Foner, Peggy McIntosh, Andrew Hacker, Ruth Frankenberg, John Howard Griffin, David Roediger, Kathleen Heal Cleaver, Noel Ignatiev, Cherrie Moraga, and Reginald Horsman, attack such questions as: *How was whiteness invented, and why? *How has the category whiteness changed over time? *Why did some immigrant groups, such as the Irish and Jews, start out as nonwhite and later became white? *Can some individual people be both white and nonwhite at different times, and what does it mean to "pass for white"? *At what point does pride in being white cross the line into white power or white supremacy? *What can whites concerned over racial inequity or white privilege do about it? Science and pseudoscience are presented side by side to demonstrate how our views on whiteness often reflect preconception, not fact. For example, most scientists hold that race is not a valid scientific category -- genetic differences between races are insignificant compared to those within them. Yet, the "one drop" rule, whereby those with any nonwhite heritage are classified as nonwhite, persists even today. In this brilliant study, Thomas Pfau argues that the loss of foundational concepts in classical and medieval Aristotelian philosophy caused a fateful separation between reason and will in European thought. Pfau traces the evolution and eventual deterioration of key concepts of human agency—will, person, judgment, action—from antiquity through Scholasticism and on to eighteenth-century moral theory and its critical revision in the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Featuring extended critical discussions of Aristotle, Gnosticism, Augustine, Aquinas, Ockham, Hobbes, Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Hutcheson, Hume, Adam Smith, and Coleridge, this study contends that the humanistic concepts these writers seek to elucidate acquire meaning and significance only inasmuch as we are prepared positively to engage (rather than historicize) their previous usages. Beginning with the rise of theological (and, eventually, secular) voluntarism, modern thought appears increasingly reluctant and, in time, unable to engage the deep history of its own underlying conceptions, thus leaving our understanding of the nature and function of humanistic inquiry increasingly frayed and incoherent. One consequence of this shift is to leave the moral self-expression of intellectual elites and ordinary citizens alike stunted, which in turn has fueled the widespread notion that moral and ethical concerns are but a special branch of inquiry largely determined by opinion rather than dialogical reasoning, judgment, and practice. A clear sign of this regression is the present crisis in the study of the humanities, whose role is overwhelmingly conceived (and negatively appraised) in terms of scientific theories, methods, and objectives. The ultimate casualty of this reductionism has been the very idea of personhood and the disappearance of an adequate ethical language. Minding the Modern is not merely a chapter in the history of ideas; it is a thorough phenomenological and metaphysical study of the roots of today's predicaments.
