Excerpt from Der Streit Um Spengler: Kritik Seiner Kritiker Nicht ohne Erschrecken bemerkt der Verfasser bei Beendigung dieses in kritischer Abwehr begonnenen Versuches. dass man ihn i1n Gegenteil. zwar wohl nicht der Parteinahme, doch fast einer Verliebtheit in den Helden seiner kritischen Odysseusfahrten zeihen werde ein Zwiespalt, dessen psychologische Erklarung in der eigenen kritischen Studie des Verfassers liegt, die dieser Durch musterung der Spenglerliteratur vorausgegangen ist, doch deren Abschluss und Veroffentlichung erst noch Spenglers zweiten Band sowie die endgultige Neuherausgabe des ersten abzuwarten haben wird. Hat sich das kritische Gemut namlich des eigenen Ingrimms und XViderstandes entladen. so betrachtet es bekanntlich schon aus Reaktion die positiven seiten des Objekts mit neuer Liebe. Diese waren es ja doch von Anfang an, die sein lebendiges Interesse erregt hatten. Kommt nun dazu noch das von allen Seiten tonende Geschrei vielfaltiger Verwerfung (das im Grunde nicht viel anderes besagt. als was man selbst bescheidentlich auch schon an jenem Buche bemerkt hatte), so erwachst unwillkurlich das Bedurfnis, auch die starken des inkriminierteii FVerkes und ware es auch nur in der Minoritat von zweien zu verteidigen, da mit verschwindenden Ausnahmen die gewaltige Mehrheit von Kritikern aus allen Lagern, wissenschaftlichen, schriftstellerischen und politischen, geschlossen in der wohlgerusteten Phalanx des Sammelhefts, gepanzert in der dickleibigen Gegenschrift oder ausschwarmend in Einzelbroschurem Zeitschrift und Zeitungsaufsatzen und Vortragen, in tausendfacher Uliermaclit gegen den einzelnen Sturm lauft. Gleich einem Klotz ragt dieses einsame Buch aus der Springflut, (lie es nun vier Jahre lang umbrandet, imponierend schon durch den schweigenden Gegensatz. Dies moge den Anreiz erklaren, die Gesamtheit der Kisitikeii ihrerseits zu wurdigen. Nichts ist dabei weniger beabsichtigt als Antikritik, die niemand uberzeugt und niemandem genug tut. XVeder im Sinne einer VViderlegung aller Irrtumer der bisherigen Kritiken von uberlegener Sachkenntnis aus, was die Umfassungskraft des einzelnen bei weitem ubersteigen wurde, noch im Sinne einer gegen seitigen selbstaufhebung der gegensatzlichen Behauptungen, wie es wohl manchmal moglich xvare, doch sachlich nichts-sagend bliebe, und am allerwenigsten endlich im Sinne einer Spenglersclieti 0 rthodoxie, die alle Angriffe auf sein WVerk zu entkraiften hatte. Dazu fehlt dem Verfasser jegliche Veranlassung. FVenn er sich einen objektiven Grund fur diesen scheinbar so anmafzendeii Versuch einer Gesamtbeurteiluug der kritischen Literatur zugute halten darf, so ware es nur der, dafz er an beiden Parteien gleiclnniilaig Anteil zu haben glaubt. This book examines the broad range of social and intellectualresponses to technology in the first four decades of this century, andsuggests that these responses set the terms that continue to governcontemporary debates. Starting around 1900, technology became a lively subject for debate among intellectuals, writers, and other opinion leaders. The expansion of the machine into ever more areas of social and economic life had led to a need to interpret its meanings in a more comprehensive way than in the past. World War I and its aftermath shifted the terms of this ongoing debate by underlining both the potential dangers of technology and its centrality to modern life. This book examines the broad range of social and intellectual responses to technology in the first four decades of this century, and suggests that these responses set the terms that continue to govern contemporary debates. Focusing on the broader contexts within which intellectual positions are formed, the book highlights the ways in which attitudes toward technology were shaped in a wide variety of national and organizational settings. A common theme is that, in debating technology, people drew on their distinctive national symbols and cultural traditions.
