This story tells about the life and experiences of a young man, our narrator, who grew up in a small-town in America. A biography of this townie (as we will call him) is not intended in this story. He will be treated by the author as a fictional character, Roger Williams, although this young man did experience most events in the story. The parts of the story which are fictional are interwoven with actual events in order to connect events within the sequence of the story and in the order that they occurred. Hopefully, the fictional parts will be indistinguishable from the other. The young man, his service associates and a few fictional cohorts, were the participants in this most remarkable story about conditions of battle within the course of the Cold War and the allied western nations intelligence services operations that were centered in Berlin, West Germany. In the small town home of this man, he was separated from U.S. national politics and most world events by distances, community-attitudes and his own immaturity. With education, travel and some happenstance he grew into a person of the world, zur Weit kommen (to the world he comes.) The first part of this story tells about his youth in small town America while World War II was ending and there was a realization, nationally, that a Cold War was raging. This story shows that small town America was not as far from the Cold War the front-line and world events as the town=s residents might have realized. In retrospect, the world actually came to small.

Nonhuman animals are ubiquitous to our ‘human’ societies. Interdisciplinary human/animal research has - for 50 years - drawn attention to how animals are ever-present in what we think of as human spaces and cultures. Our societies are built with animals and through all kinds of multispecies interactions. From public spaces and laboratories to homes, farms and in the ‘wilderness’; human and nonhuman animals meet to make space and place together, through webs of power relations. However, the very spaces of these interactions are not mute or passive themselves. The spaces where species meet matter, and shape human/animal relations. This book takes as its starting point the relationship between place and human/animal interaction. It brings together the work of leading scholars in human/animal studies, from a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary backgrounds. With a distinct focus on place, physical space and biocultural geography, the authors of this volume consider the ways in which space, human and nonhuman animals co-constitute each other, how they make spaces together, produce meaning around them, struggle over access, how these places are storied and how stories of spaces matter. In 1943, fierce aerial bombardment razed the Berlin zoo and killed most of its animals. But only two months after the war's end, Berliners had already resurrected it, reopening its gates and creating a symbol of endurance in the heart of a shattered city. As this episode shows, the Berlin zoo offers one of the most unusual--yet utterly compelling--lenses through which to view German history. This enormously popular attraction closely mirrored each of the political systems under which it existed: the authoritarian monarchy of the kaiser, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, and the post-1945 democratic and communist states. Gary Bruce provides the first English-language history of the Berlin zoo, from its founding in 1844 until the 1990 unification of the West Berlin and East Berlin zoos. At the center of the capital's social life, the Berlin zoo helped to shape German views not only of the animal world but also of the human world for more than 150 years. Given its enormous reach, the German government used the zoo to spread its political message, from the ethnographic display of Africans, Inuit, and other "exotic" peoples in the late nineteenth century to the Nazis' bizarre attempts to breed back long-extinct European cattle. By exploring the intersection of zoology, politics, and leisure, Bruce shows why the Berlin zoo was the most beloved institution in Germany for so long: it allowed people to dream of another place, far away from an often grim reality. It is not purely coincidence that the profound connection of Berliners to their zoo intensified through the bloody twentieth century.
