Der Abschied von den Toten, den die Lebenden (und oft nur die Überlebenden) mit den Mitteln ritueller Trauer in Szene setzen, ist ein universelles (und damit unerschöpfliches) Phänomen. Der vorliegende Band hat seinen Schwerpunkt in den Toten- und Trauerriten des südasiatischen Raumes, dem zwei ganz andere Bereiche gegenüber gestellt werden: die Toten- und Trauerriten im Alten Orient und Alten Ägypten einerseits und die Auseinandersetzung mit Tod und Trauer in der westlichen Moderne - insbesondere mit den Opfern des Holocaust in Deutschland und Israel. Diese breite und dennoch punktuelle Beleuchtung der Phänomene führt nicht nur die kulturelle Differenz und anthropologische Konstanz vor Augen, sie vermittelt zugleich einen Eindruck von der Aufgabe einer transkulturellen Angleichung des Trauerverhaltens in den Zeiten der Globalisierung - eine weltumfassende und medial inszenierte Trauer, wie sie etwa anläßlich der Todesopfer der Tsunami-Katastrophe in Süd- und Ostasien oder des Todes von Papst Johannes Paul II. vor aller Augen stand.

Das Lebendigbegrabenwerden aufgrund von Scheintod war bereits den alten Griechen bekannt und hielt sich als Motiv in der Literatur über Jahrhunderte, nie aber erhitzte es die Gemüter so wie um 1800. Vor allem in Deutschland katapultiert sich das Randphänomen schlagartig ins Zentrum öffentlichen Interesses und lässt eine Hysterie entstehen, die mit einem Konvolut an Veröffentlichungen von Monographien einherging, und schließlich ebenso plötzlich wieder abebbte. Sabrina Dietrich beleuchtet und diskutiert ausgewählte Ansätze der Sekundärliteratur anhand von medizinischen Schriften aus der Jahrhundertwende des 18. zum 19. Jahrhunderts, vor allem von Frank und Hufeland. Essentiell sind dabei die Auswirkungen der Aufklärung auf die Gesellschaft und die Wechselwirkung von neuem (medizinischen) Wissen und Todesverständnis. Dabei wird eine wissenschaftsübergreifende Deutung gefunden, die aufzeigt, dass sowohl die anthropologische Transformation und Kontingenzerfahrung, aber vor allem die vorher schon existierende, der Menschheit immanenten elementaren Todesangst zu dem außergewöhnlichen Angstphänomen "Scheintod" führen.

'Symbolising' - i.e., representing through the use of media - is a more elementary, more foundational activity than the self-conscious use of the intellect. Its exploration is central to this investigation of the transformation of the pre-exilic Yahweh religion into the monotheism of the post-exilic period. That transformation was triggered by a new constellation of key media in the pre-exilic and exilic periods: writing, images, and money. The central objective is to understand how their use contributed to a decisive increase in abstraction in representation and led to changes in the conceptualisation of divine presence and its representation that ultimately resulted in the transition from monolatry to monotheism. In this study, Joachim Schaper explores neglected areas of Judahite material culture and contributes to an in-depth reconstruction of Judah's religious history in its most important epoch, and thus of one of the key developments in the religious history of humanity.

Why discuss birth and death when they lie outside discourse? And why look at them together when they are so much unlike each other, one the moment of fresh beginnings, joys, and the relative certainties of existence, the other the moment of life’s end, grief, and the relative uncertainties of non-existence? Because it turns out that both events, while virtually unrepresentable, have spawned a host of representations, narratives, rites, and attempts at making sense of them; and because they may have more similarities than appears at first sight. The 13 interdisciplinary articles collected in this volume prove that looking at the two phenomena in tandem throws into sharp relief the distinct patterns and functions of each, while also highlighting some of the fundamental historical developments, cultural functions, and socio-political issues shared by both. Spätestens seit der Lehre vom Naturzustand, die Thomas Hobbes auf so folgenreiche Weise ausgearbeitet hat, steht die Todesproblematik im Zentrum der politischen Philosophie. Denn unter der Bedingung einer geringeren Eindämmung durch Jenseitsfiktionen erscheint die Absolutheit des Todes nicht nur als eine angstbesetzte Bedrohung, sondern zugleich auch als das, was die politische Ordnung aufrecht erhält. Mit der Fundierung der Gemeinschaft in einer Todesdrohung, die alle angeht, taucht jedoch zugleich eine neue Problematik auf: die Zersetzung der Gemeinschaft, der wiederum allein durch den Horizont einer kollektiven Todesdrohung entgegengewirkt werden kann. Ausgehend von dieser Problematik, zeichnet die Studie von Leander Scholz am Leitfaden politischer Thanatologien den historischen Umbau von einer politischen Theologie zur politischen Ökonomie nach, sowie die Umformung der politischen Ökonomie zu einer politischen Ökologie. Hierbei steht die Formierung eines Lebenswillens im Vordergrund, der nicht mehr bereit ist, die Verinnerlichung der Todesdrohung als Horizont seiner Selbstbehauptung anzuerkennen.
