Die Menschen im Abendland sind besonders stolz auf ihre in Jahrhunderten erzielten kulturellen Errungenschaften, sie bezeichnen sich als aufgeklärt und seit 200 Jahren als Wesen, die ihre Taten nach dem Gesichtspunkt der Vernünftigkeit und Gerechtigkeit gestalten. Eine Reihe von Schlagworten wie Demokratie, Freiheit usw. kennzeichnen insbesondere die Politik, aber bei nüchterner sachlicher Kritik stellt sich so manches als bloße Fassade heraus, Entscheidungen werden anscheinend nach Gefühl und jeweils günstiger Interessenslage gefällt. Die wünschenswerte Selbstkontrolle versagt so manches Mal, weil die von einzelnen Individuen erreichte persönliche Macht den Blick für objektive Betrachtung und Achtung vor Andersdenkenden verstellt. Die Erfahrung lehrt uns, dass die Menschen unterschiedlich denken, entscheiden und handeln und dass darunter solche sind, die nicht von Vernunft geleitet zu sein scheinen und der Gesellschaft schaden. Zu den Ursachen dafür gehört offensichtlich, dass zu wenig nachgedacht wird, aber warum? Liegt es etwa an der Veranlagung oder daran, dass die Fähigkeiten einzelner erschöpft sind, oder an der Erziehung, am Einfluss von außen, den Informationen, denen sie ausgesetzt sind und denen sie glauben und die womöglich ihre Ängste schüren? Ihre Widerstandskraft, die aus Selbstbewußtsein und Selbstbestimmung gespeist werden, sind begrenzt, wie so manche historische Ereignisse in Deutschland offenbaren. Der Mensch ist gerade das Wesen in der Natur, das durch seine Denkfähigkeiten, seine Intelligenz befähigt ist, in Richtung auf stetige Besserung, auf Fortschritt vorzugehen, auftauchende Probleme vernünftig zu lösen, aber er kann auch im gegenteiligen Sinne sein Leben verbringen und damit so manche Katastrophe erzeugen oder einen Untergang provozieren. In unserer Bildung kommt das Lernen von kritischem Denken nicht vor, ein Denken mit Verantwortung und überlegender Vernünftigkeit ist ein Stiefkind der Menschheit. Das muss anders werden.

Viele Zeitgenossen stellen sich das Leben so vor, dass der Mensch sein Leben, um seine Existenz zu sichern, rational und ökonomisch zu gestalten habe. Das Heimatgefühl ist in fast jedem Individuum tief verwurzelt und dokumentiert so die Unterschiede in der Landschaft, in den Gewohnheiten usw. In verschiedenen Gegenden entstehen jetzt noch Heimatvereine, werden Tage der Heimat inszeniert, werden Volksfeste arrangiert. Sogar die Politik widmet sich deren Zielsetzungen, ja artet sogar in Ab- und Aufwertungen der einzelnen aus, zum Schaden von Solidarität und Friedlichkeit. Das, was einst Einbürgerung und Gleichstellung waren, ist derzeit durch "Fremde", Migranten usw. gestört und deshalb wäre alles zu fördern, was ein nachbarschaftliches Verhältnis bessert. Das kann sogar zu gegenseitiger Anerkennung kultureller Werte und von Heimatgefühlen verhelfen; der eine hat eine Heimat, der andere hat sie vielleicht verloren. Und der Verlust von Heimat ist schmerzlich. So lässt sich die Zukunft von Heimat und Heimatgefühl konkretisieren, wobei Nachdenken sehr wichtig ist.
