This is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. In it, bodies, desires and identities are constantly remodelled through the formation of difference. Therefore, male queerness here does not mean the representation of male homosexuality. Rather, it is the dynamic result of complex medial processes, affects and (self-)knowledge on and off the screen. Building on Eve K. Sedgwick's queer-feminist concept of queer performativity, the author creates a historically situated model with which she traces various figures of technically anthropomorphic queer masculinity in the medium of film in an empowering sense. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition Performative Figuren queerer Männlichkeit by Christiane König, published by J.B.Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. Die ambivalente Beziehung der Deutschen gegenüber den USA setzte sich nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg fort: Ob als 'Befreier' und Verbündete oder als 'imperialistischer Feindesstaat' - je nach politischer Gesinnung und kultureller Zugehörigkeit konnte man in den USA und ihrer Kultur die Verheißung schlechthin oder den ultimativen Dämon erkennen. Euphorie und Hysterie bildeten gewissermaßen den roten Faden in der Amerikarezeption der Deutschen.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg existierte neben der militärischen Konfrontation auch ein "gezeichneter Kriegsschauplatz": Anhand der Bereiche Comic, Cartoon und Trickfilm untersucht Niels Schröder die zeichnerischen Frontverläufe der sich bekriegenden Humorkulturen in den USA und in Deutschland. Die USA waren Anfang der 1930er Jahre sowohl im Zeichentrickfilm als auch im Genre der Comic-Hefte federführend. Auf deutscher Seite war die nationalsozialistische Führung bestrebt, eine eigene Humorindustrie aufzubauen. Hitler war bekanntlich ein Bewunderer Walt Disneys, und Propagandaminister Joseph Goebbels versuchte nach 1939, aus den von Deutschland besetzten Ländern talentierte Zeichner anzuwerben. Unter dem Druck des Krieges entstanden so einige beachtenswerte deutsche Zeichentrickfilme. Neben dem Kampf an diesen gezeichneten Fronten behandelt die Studie auch die psychologische Kraft des Humors. Versucht ein Regime den Humor, letztlich eine anarchische und somit unkontrollierbare Energie, für seine Zwecke einzusetzen, so richtet sich dieser letztlich gegen das Regime selbst.

Er lotete die Grenzen des Zeigbaren aus, dehnte sie, überschritt sie. Galt das Kino in seinen Anfängen noch selbst als skandalös, wurden zunehmend einzelne Filme zum Skandalon erhoben. Kai Nowak untersucht erstmals systematisch Filmskandale im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts unter Rückgriff auf eine breite Presse-, Film- und Aktenüberlieferung. Er zeigt, inwieweit Filmskandale als Seismographen des gesellschaftlichen Werte- und Normenwandels in der Moderne fungierten und die Deutung von Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft der Weimarer Republik ausfochten. Im Konflikt über Fragen wie den angemessenen Umgang mit den Grenzbereichen des Lebens, Vorstellungen staatlicher Ordnung, nationaler und regionaler Identität oder der Geschlechterordnung verhandelten Filmskandale nichts weniger als die politisch-moralischen Grundlagen des Gemeinwesens. Denn Filmskandale waren, so die These des Buches, Projektionen der Moral.
