Progress in medicine has traditionally relied heavily on classical research pathways involving randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to establish reliable evidence for any given therapeutic intervention. However, not only are RCTs lengthy and expensive, they have a number of other disadvantages, including the fact that they are currently failing to keep pace with the number of potential innovative treatment options being developed, particularly in areas such as rare diseases. With the vast amount of data increasingly available for use in profiling patient characteristics and establishing correlations between outcomes and potential predictors, predictive modeling may offer a potential solution to the limitations of RCTs. For this purpose, measurement data reflecting these conditions have to be integrated into models of cardiac electrophysiology. Several methods for this model adaptation are introduced in this thesis. Problem-based learning (PBL) has excited interest among educators around the world for several decades. Among the most notable applications of PBL is the approach taken at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life sciences (FHML) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. Starting in 1974 as a medical school, the faculty embarked on the innovative pathway of problem-based learning, trying to establish a medical training program which applied recent insights of education which would be better adapted to the needs of the modem physician. The medical school, currently part of the FHML, can be considered as an 'established' school, where original innovations and educational changes have become part of a routine. The first book to bring this wealth of information together, Lessons from Problem-based Learning documents those findings and shares the experiences of those involved, to encourage further debate and refinement of problem-based learning in specific applications elsewhere and in general educational discussion and thought. Each chapter provides a description of why and what has been done in the Maastricht program, followed by reflection on the benefits and issues that have arisen for these developments. Simulations are an integral part of medical education today. Many universities have simulation centers, so-called skills labs, where students and medical personal can practice diagnostics and procedures on life-like mannequins. Others offer simulation courses in the different sub-disciplines. In the pre-clinical phase, simulations are used to illustrate basic principles in physiology, anatomy, genetics, and biochemistry. For example, simulations can show how the metabolism of enzymes changes in the presence of inhibitors, illustrating drug actions. This book covers all areas of simulations in medicine, starting from the molecular level via tissues and organs to the whole body. At the beginning of each chapter, a biological phenomenon is described, such as cell communication, gene translation, or the action of anti-carcinogenic drugs on tumors. In the following, simulations that illustrate these phenomena are discussed in detail, with the focus on how to use and interpret these simulations. The book is complemented by topics such as serious games and distance medicine. The book is based on a course for medical students organized in the editor's department. Every year, around 300 international undergraduate medical students take the course.
